May 22, 1961
Regular meeting of the Board of Public_ Works opened
at 7:30 P.M. in Room 14, Municipal Building.
Present were Chairman Florence, Secretary Ames,
Board Members Leonard, Hodson and Watt and Superintendent Welch.
Minutes of the previous meeting read and approved.
Read letter from Harry Keefe, President, Tennyson
Association, requesting permission to block off Tennyson Road
on Saturday, Tune 17, 1961, from 3:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M. in
order to hold a block party. In case of inclement weather, per-
mission was requested for Tune 24, 1961. Mr. Leonard moved that
permission be granted to the Tennyson Association, Mr. Watt
seconded and it was voted.
' The Chairman read note from the Board of Selectmen
and letter from the Garden Club with reference to the Anti-
litter Campaign containing certain requests. Mr. Ames moved
that the Superintendent write a letter to the Selectmen advis-
ing what had been accomplished by the Board of Public. Works in
this respect. Mr. Hodson seconded and it was voted.
Read note from the Superintendent relative to the
Sidewalk Construction Account. Petitions on file follow:
Charles Street - End of 1960 work to
Wakefield Street . . $3,500.00
Pratt Street - East Side - Prescott to
Woburn Street. . . . 1,500.00
Grove Street - East Side - Lowell to
Forest Street. . . . . . . 7,000.00
Total. . . . . . . 12,000.00
A discussion followed. Mr. Leonard moved that Pratt Street and
Charles Street be selected as sidewalk projects for 1961. Mr.

Ames seconded and the motion carried.
Mr. Leonard moved the petitioners for a sidewalk on
Grove Street be notified that it is not possible to process the
petition unless it contains a majority of the signatures of abut-
ters where the installation is to be made. Mr. Watt seconded and
it was voted.
The Board temporarily adjourned at 7:45 P.M. to meet as
the Board of Survey.
The Board reconvened at 7:55 P.M.
Read letter from Gilbert Stanford, Manager, Municipal
Light Department, regarding extensive damage which has been done
to the lighting units at the ice skating areas and Mr. Welch' s
comments thereto. -
Mr. Leonard moved that letters be sent to the School
Department and Reading Chronicle explaining the situation and re-
questing their cooperation; also, that this Board feels any per-
son apprehended should be prosecuted to the full extent of the
law. Mr. Ames seconded and it was voted.
Read letter from the Fire Department regarding renaming
one part of South Street and Mr. Welch's comments thereto. Mr.
Ames moved that the Board of Public Works hold a public hearing on
the renaming of part of South Street and enclose with the notifica-
tion copy of letter received from Chief James Perry of the Reading
Fire Department. Mr. Leonard seconded and it was voted.
Mr. Florence read letter from Librarian Joseph Schmuch
regarding proposed walk between the Town Building and Reading
Library. A discussion followed. Mr. Watt moved that a grano-

lithic concrete walk be installed. Mr. Leonard seconded and
' it was voted.
Read bids on addressing machine received Thursday,
May 18, 1961 as follows:
The Farrington Co. $1,820.00
Elliott Industries 1,966.50
The above prices are for a basic machine.
Mr. Leonard moved that since the Farrington Machine
met the requirements of the Superintendent who is responsible
for the functioning of this Department, and being low bidder,
that said machine be purchased. Mr. Watt seconded and the
motion carried.
Mr. Leonard also moved that the National Cash Register
Machine be purchased. Mr. Watt seconded and it was voted.
Chairman read letter from Raymond H. Julian, Attorney,
for Thomas Communications Corporation. Mr. Leonard moved that
the letter in its entirety be turned over to Mr. Killam, Town
Counsel. Mr. Ames seconded and it was voted.
Signed Order of Taking for drainage and sewerage pur-
poses on Whitehall Lane, parallel to the division property line
of Lots 11 and 12, said side line being ten (10) feet parallel
to the division property line running a distance of 100 feet from
the side line of Whitehall Lane .
Signed Sewer House Connection Commitment Sheet.
Signed Pay-roll and Bill-roll for the period May 14,
1961 through May 20, 1961.
