Regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
7:30 P.M. in Room 14, Municipal Building.
Present were Chairman Florence, Secretary Ames, Board
Members Leonard, Hodson and Watt and Superintendent Welch.
Minutes of the previous meeting read and approved as
amended.
The Board adjourned temporarily at 7:35 P.M. to meet
as the Board of Survey.
The Board reconvened at 9:10 P.M.
Hearing was heldregarding the proposed extension of
the main trunk sanitary sewer in Salem Street from Pearl Street
to Eaton Street. Four abutters attended the hearing and voted
in favor.
Mr. Ames moved that the Board install the sewer in
Salem Street during 1961. It was seconded and voted.
Hearing was held for the purpose of taking an easement
for drainage and sewerage purposes Northwesterly of Charles
Street through lands of Leonard S. West and Margaret M. West. Mr.
Hest attended the meeting and voted in favor. Release from
damages having been signed, Mr. Leonard moved, Mr. Watt seconded
and it was voted to make the taking.
Read note from the Superintendent suggesting that com-
mercial dumping at the Town Dump on Sundays be prohibited. Mr.
Ames moved that Mr. Welch' s recommendation be followed, effective
April 16, and that an advertisement be inserted in the local news-

paper to that effect. Mr. Leonard moved to amend the motion that
suitable signs be posted at the Dump. The amendment was seconded

and voted. Mr. Ames ' motion was seconded and voted.
It was also suggested that the Board of Selectmen be
advised that this Board is still interested in a schedule of pro-
posed dump fees.
The Chairman read Mr. Welch' s comments regarding new
closing hour of the Dump due to the use of sanitary fill. Mr.
Leonard moved that the Dump operating hours be from 7:00 A.M. to
7:00 P.M. and that a notice appear in the local newspaper to this
effect simultaneously with the item on commercial dumping. Mr.
Ames seconded and it was voted.
The Chairman read Mr. Welch' s suggestion that the gen-
eral vacation period be from July 15, 1961 to July 30, 1961. Mr.
Leonard moved that the Superintendent 's recommendation be ap-
proved, Mr. Watt seconded and it was voted.
Read letter from Walter E. Hawkes, Athletic Director,
Reading high School, requesting use of different fields for
several purposes. Mr. Leonard moved that the request be granted
with the exceptions noted in Mr. Welch's comments. Mr. Watt
seconded and the motion carried.
Read letter from the Board of Selectmen regarding a
request from the Village Shop Association for permission to hold
their Annual Outdoor Art Festival on the Reading Common on June
10; in case of inclement weather, June 17. Mr. Leonard moved
that the request be complied with, Mr. Watt seconded and it was
voted.

Mr. Ames moved, Mr. Hodson seconded and it was voted
that the next meeting of the Board of Public Works would be held
April 10, 1961.
Read letter from John Cronin, 403 Pearl Street, and
signed by 19 abutters regarding water condition existing on
Pearl Street from #376-414 Pearl Street and the possible connec-
tion by George Edgett to a future storm drain. No action was
taken pending receipt of further information.
Mr. Ames informed the Board that the Trustees of the
Old South Methodist Church felt very strongly that the inherent
beauty of the Church is being obscured by tall and weatherbeaten
shrubs on the northern end of the Common. The Trustees wonder
if the Town would consider putting in low shrubs in order that
the Church would appear to better advantage. A discussion fol-
lowed. The Board surveyed the conditionsin the field and it was
agreed that the trees should be removed and shrubbery substituted.
