July 25, 1960
Regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened
at 7:30 P.M. in Room 14, Municipal Building.
Present were Chairman Florence, Secretary Harrison,
Board Members Ames and Hodson and Superintendent Welch.
Minutes of the previous meeting read and approved.
Petition was presented to the Board by a delegation
of home owners of Reading Terrace and Putnam Road demanding
that asphalt sidewalks be installed in the respective streets.
In most cases, according to the abutters, asphalt sidewalks
had been promised by either developer or builder and was a
selling point used by Robert Stone & Company in selling the lots
and houses. Mr. Florence informed the group that the Board would
recognize the petition, take it under advisement and notify one
member of the delegation of its decision. A discussion will be
held at a later date.
Read note from Superintendent recommending that an
abatement of $25.00 be allowed on the April 1, 1960 water bill of
William Jones , Jr. , 64 Minot Street. The bill in question amounted
to $64.60. Mr. Harrison moved, Mr. Hodson seconded and it was
voted to follow Mr. Welch's recommendation.
The Board temporarily adjourned at 7:55 P.M. to meet as
the Board of Survey.
The Board reconvened at 9:25 P.M.
The Chairman read a report on the April water bill of
the Atlantic Food Mart in the amount of $995.00. Due to the fact
that the normal bill is around $190.00-$225.00, and also that ex-

tensive tests were made to determine the cost of the high bill,
it was recommended that an abatement of $475.00 be allowed. Mr.
Ames moved that the Superintendentts recommendation be accepted,
Mr. Harrison seconded and it was voted.
Mr. Florence brought before the Board again the re-
quest by Anton's (Cleaners) for approval of a sign to be erected
on Harnden Street. Mr. Ames made a motion that approval of this
sign be held in abeyance until a detailed set of drawings drawn
to scale has been received. Mr. Harrison seconded and it was
voted.
It was moved by Mr. Ames, seconded by Mr. Harrison and
voted to hold in abeyance until the next meeting any discussion
on street acceptances.
Read letter from Douglas B. Lincoln, Treasurer, Board
of Trustees, Old South Methodist Church, requesting an abatement
of future highway betterment assessments on the new parsonage
at 24 Linnea Lane . Mr. Harrison moved, Mr. Ames seconded and it
was voted that a token payment of $10.00 be assessed.
Mr. Harrison moved, Mr. Ames seconded and it was voted
not to hold Board Meetings in August except upon call from the
Chairman . Board Meetings had been scheduled for August 8, 1960
and August 22 , 1960.
The Board signed contract between the Town of Reading
and Ren-Con Construction Company (low bidder) for Repairs to the
Mineral Street Bridge.
The Board signed the pay roll and bill roll for the ,
period July 17 through July 23 , 1960.

The Chairman read the list of bidders on one 125 cubic
foot compressor which is as follows:

Mr. Harrison moved, Mr. Hodson seconded that the Superintend-
ent 's recommendation be followed to purchase an Ingersoll-Rand
Compressor from the low bidder , Hedge & Mattheis , and it was
so voted.
The Chairman read letter from Turner Construction
Company requesting permit to install new storm sewer in Jacob
' Way and make connection of storm water drain line from the new
Addison-Wesley Building to the sewer main. Mr. Welch suggested
that it be approved subject to the usual provisions. The main
provision in this case is that it be done at their expense. Mr.
Harrison moved that it be approved, Mr. Hodson seconded and it
was voted.
Read petition from abutters of Putnam Road in which
they requested that the street be accepted as a Public Way. Mr.
Welch explained that for the time being it can only be placed on
file . A detailed discussion was held and it was voted to hold a
conference August 4, 1960 at the Community Center at 8:00 P.M.
with the home owners in Woodland Acres. The Board Members and
all home owners in Woodland Acres will be so notified.
