June 27, 1960
Regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened
at 7:30 P.M. in Room 14, Municipal Building.
Present were Chairman Florence, Secretary Harrison,
Board Members Ames and Hodson, Acting Superintendent Watson
and Civil Engineer Boutiette.
Minutes of the previous meeting read and approved.
Mr. Ames requested a report from the Chairman on his
visit with Mr. Houthier, 108 Winthrop Avenue. Mr. Florence
reported that Mr. Houthier would be satisfied with a load of
loam and seeding.
Head letter from the Swimming Pool Committee. Mr.
Ames moved that the Acting Superintendent write a letter to
the Swimming Pool Committee and quote in part from Mr. Welch' s
resume ' of the parks in Reading. This letter requested certain
specific Information and not opinions. tar. Harrison seconded
and it was voted.
The Chairman read Superintendent Welch' s recommenda-
tion of John Famolare as Working Foreman in the Park Department
at a salary of $84.00 a week. After a general discussion, Mr.
Harrison moved that the Superintendent's recommendation be
followed, Mr. Ames seconded and it was voted.
The Board considered the request of Agostino Pelosi,
42 Dana Road, to connect a drain from his cellar to the storm
drain in Dana Road. Mr. Boutiette explained the sketch and
conditions under which the installation would be made. Mr.

Ames moved that permission be granted, Mr. Harrison seconded
and it was voted.
The Board temporarily adjourned at 8:00 P.M. to
meet as the Board of Survey.
The meeting reconvened at 9:00 P.M.
Signed the Pay roll and Bill roll for the period
June 19 through June 25, 1960.
Both abutters having signed a Release from Damages
in favor of the Town, the Board signed Orders of Taking for
the proposed Drain Easement
Southerly of Van Morden Road through lands of Frank
R. Gray, Jr. et ux and Frederick R. Burrill at ux,
and being located on Lots 2 and 3 Van Norden Road.
The portion of said Basement located on Lot 2 is
20.00 feet wide and parallel to the division proper-
ty line between said Lots 2 and 3. The portion of
said Easement located on Lot 3 begins 120.00 feet
Southerly of Van Norden Road and is 25.00 feet wide
and parallel to the division property line between
said Lots 2 and 3.
Read letter from Addison-Wesley Publishing Company
addressed to the Town of Reading and Fitzgerald Construction
Company regarding use of Englund Road and South Street for
access to its property during the period when Jacob Way will be
Inaccessible; also copy of letter to be signed by Jacob N. and
Grace Zeytoonian. Permission was also asked for the Turner
Construction Company to use South Street and Englund Road for
trucking in steel and other necessary materials.
It was recommended that releases be obtained from
Turner Construction Company, Jacob N. and Grace Zeytoonian and
Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, and that a letter also be

obtained from Fitzgerald Construction Company saying they will
adequately maintain the street. Upon receipt of these, Mr.
Harrison moved, Mr. Ames seconded and it was voted to grant
permission.
Mr. Hodson brought before the Board a letter re-
ceived by Roger H. Smith, 401 Lowell Street, Reading, from Mr.
Welch regarding a summer position with the Board of Public
Works. Through some misunderstanding, the positions were all
filled when Mr. Smith reported for work. Mr. Hodson moved,
Mr. Harrison seconded and it was voted that Mr. Smith be em-
ployed beginning the week of July 3.
Read letter from Harold F. Parker requesting permis-
sion for the Rotary Club to string a banner across Main Street
advertising the Mills Brothers Circus which will perform in
Reading, July 11 and 12. It was moved, seconded and voted to
grant permission.
Hearing was held at 9:15 P. M. for the purpose of
taking an Easement for drainage and sewerage purposes through
private property Southerly of Bolton Street. The abutter did
not attend. It was moved, seconded and voted to approve the
taking subject to the necessary Release.
Hearing was held regarding the proposed location of
a jointly-owned New England Telephone & Telegraph and Municipal
Light Department pole on Indiana Avenue, Westerly side, ap-
proximately 150 feet Southerly from California Road. It was
moved, seconded and voted to approve the new pole location.

Mr. Ames brought up the subject of acceptance of
new streets upon the release of the bond. In his opinion it
should be automatic, thereby possibly saving the abutters con-
siderable in betterments. Mr. Ames felt that before the
$29,000 bond on Ash Hill Road is released, the Board should
have some definite policy with respect to the abutters. It
was recommended that Mr. Watson or Mr. Boutiette discuss the
above in detail with the Superintendent.
Mr. Ames moved, it was seconded and voted to have
the Bill roll made out and presented to the full Board every
other week and have the Pay roll signed every week as voted.
The meeting adjourned at 10:00 P.M.

The undersigned, Board of Public Works of the Town of
Reading, in compliance with the provisions of General Laws,
Chapter 80, as amended by Chapter 63 of the Acts of 1933,
hereby certify that the list herewith contains the names of
persons against whom we have made betterment assessments, to-
gether with the location of the land benefited by the improve-
ment and the nature and amount of such betterment assessment.
And such list is certified to you for the puroose of
committing the same to the Tax Collector, as provided by law.
