Regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened
at 7:30 P.M. in Room 14, Municipal Building.
Present were Chairman Florence, Secretary Harrison,
Board Members Ames and Hodson and Superintendent Welch.
Minutes of previous meeting read and approved.
As requested, Mr. Florence reported he had contacted
Police Chief Ellis regarding his view on the relocation of
Pearl Street and reported that he hoped for an early reply.
Messrs . Macomber, Legg and Gagnon, all residing on
Highland Street, appeared at the meeting to request sewer ex-
tensions in Highland Street near Lowell Street. Superintendent
Welch and Chairman Florence explained in detail the ledge con-
dition existing there. Mr. Ames suggested that a representa-
tive of this group bring in a petition signed by abutters .
Mr. Florence explained the procedure which must be followed.
It was recommended that Mr. Welch advise the representative by
letter this Fall as to the possible inclusion of Highland Street
in the sewer program for 1961.
Read letter from Robert H. Yeo requesting permission
to hold a Block Party on Tennyson Road, Saturday, June 18,1960
from 5:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M. - in case of rain, June 25. Mr.
Hodson moved that the request be granted. Mr. Harrison
seconded and it was voted.
The Chairman read a letter from George 0, Ferguson,
124 Salem Street, regarding the sewerage problem in that
section of town. Mr. Hodson moved that a letter be sent

advising that this situation will be reviewed in the:. Fall
for inclusion in the 1961 program.
Public Hearing was held at 8:00 P.M. regarding the
proposed location of an underground duct line in Green Street
Northerly from an existing duct line approximately 20 feet to
the property line of the Town of Reading, Municipal Light
Department. It was moved, seconded and voted to grant this
request.
Mr. Florence and Mr. Welch conferred with the
Finance Committee to discuss Articles for Special Town Meeting
of May 25, 1960.
Mr. Harrison, Acting Chairman, read a petition from
property owners of King Street regarding a drainage ditch
built by the property owners on Palmer Hill Avenue, requesting
that the matter be remedied. To correct the situation,
this section of Palmer Hill Avenue must be accepted as a
public way, proper drainage installed and betterments assessed.
Mr. Ames made a motion that the request be denied and
the first signer be notified of the reasons and the fact
that it is not a public way. Mr. Hodson seconded and it
was voted.
Mr. Harrison read a list of old bills which
apparently are uncollectible. Three bills were questioned:

Thomas McKenna 99.80
On Mr. Killam's recommendation it was decided to
table the item for further discussion.

' A letter from Nicholas L. DeFelice, Chairman of the
Board of Selectmen of Wilmington was read. Mr. Hodson made a
motion that the Board Members meet with the Wilmington
Selectmen, June 13 at 8:30 in Wilmington. Mr. Harrison
seconded and it was voted.
Mr. Welch reported on his meeting, May 13, 1960,
with Mr. Yardumian and Mr. Orchanian at Putnam Road. The
Superintendent was accompanied by Mr. Boutiette and Mr. Watson.
Mr. Welch will keep the Board informed of all progress.
A detailed discussion was held regarding the matter
of caring for trenches in lawns after the installation of
house connections and water services. This was necessary
due to the excessive number of requests which have been re-
ceived.
It was moved, seconded and voted that the Department
will maintain services on private properties for a period
of only one year subsequent to the utility installation and
that the Department may issue bills to the home owner for any
work done within the one-year period.
The meeting adjourned at 9:30 P.M.
