The meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7 :30 P.M.
Present were Chairman Zanni, Secretary Harrison, Mssrs. Donahue,
Florence and Superintendent Welch.
Records of the previous meeting were read and, approved .
Received letter from Selectmen stating that they do not approve
of erecting a brick planter on the Common.
It was moved, seconded and voted to write the Village Shop that
the Selectmen have control over the Common but that the Town Meeting
can vote to install planter if they see fit.
Received letter from Brox Bros, relative to payment for 20 percent
overage on gravel borrow item on Chap. 718 construction.
Read note from Superintendent that matter wets referred to Town
' Counsel some time ago and that another letter had been sent to Town
Counsel about the matter.
It was moved, seconded and voted to note that the letter had
been received and the contents noted.
Conferred with eight residents of Lowell Street concerning the
construction of sidewalks on the east side of Lowell Street from
Puritan Road to Beverly Road. They presented a petition signed by
49. abuttors requesting that the sidewalks not be built.
A long discussion took place about the proposal with the persons
present entering objections to the sidewalk construction as above
described . ,
It was moved, seconded and voted to rescind the vote made
May 25, 1959 to construct bituminous concrete sidewalks on the east,
side of Lowell Street from Puritan Road to Beverly Road.
It was moved, seconded and voted to construct bituminous concrete

sidewalks on the east side of Lowell Street from Puritan Road to
Grove Street.
Readnotefrom Superintendent concerning the recovering of
streets with bituminous concrete. The note suggested several
possible locations.
It was moved, seconded and voted to recover the following
locations:
1. The intersection of Minot, Washington and Lincoln Streets.
2. High Street from Lowell Street to Middlesex Avenue.
Read note from Superintendent recommending an abatement of
$20.00 on the April 1959 water bill of the Episcopal Church. It was
moved, seconded and voted to grant the above recommended abatement.
Read letter from Mr. Albert Chisholm, 176 Summer Ave .
requesting an abatement on his April 1959 water bill.
Read note from Superintendent stating that Department had done
some checking and will do more in late August after Mr. Chisholm
returns from vacation.
It was moved, seconded and voted to withhold action on the
request pending further investigation.
Considered resume of bids for Tractor and Backhoe. Superin-
tendent informed Board that only one bidder submitted a bid according
to the Department specifications. That bidder was Hedge Mattheis,
bidding on a Hough Tractor and Wain Roy Backhoe. The bids were:

Read note from Superintendent recommending the purchase of the
Hough Tractor and Wain Roy Backhoe from Hedge and Mattheis.
It was moved, seconded and voted to purchase a Hough Tractor
and Wain Roy Backhoe from Hedge and Mattbeis.
Signed Commitment Sheet for Sewer Frontage Assessment for
Lot 42, Plat 66A, Tennyson Road (No. 32 Tennyson Road ) .
Read note from Superintendent that he was planning to take a
two week vacation starting August 8, 1959 and ending August 23, 1959.
Meeting was adjourned at 10:15 P.M.

The undersigned, Board of Nblic Works of the Town of Reading,
in compliance with the provisions of General Laws, Chapter 80, as amend-
ed by Chapter 63 of the Acts of 1933, hereby certify that the list here-
with contains the name of persons against whom we have made betterment
assessments, together with the location of the land benefited by the
Improvement and the nature and amount of such betterment assessment.
And such list Is certified to you for the purpose of committing
the same to the Tax Collector, as provided by law.
