June 29, 1959
LThe regular meeting of the Board of Public Works
opened on Monday evening, June 29, 1959, at 7:30 P.M.
Chairman Zanni, Secretary Harrison, Messrs. Donahue,
Florence and Superintendent Welch were present.
Chairman Zanni was attending a joint meeting on gravel
removal so Mr. Harrison acted as Chairman and Mr. Donahue acted
as Secretary. Records of the meeting held on June 15, 1959 read
and approved .
Received letter from Mrs. Louise Richardson of the
Village Shop relative to a proposed brick flower planter on the
Reading Common in place of the sign to be removed.
It was moved, seconded and voted to refer the matter
to the Selectmen for their comments.
Conferred with Messrs. Bova, Hoffi and Duggan, all of
Ash Street relative to the possibility of extending the sewer
in Ash Street from near Brook Street to near Shackford Road.
All were assured by the Board that their request
would be given every possible consideration.
Hearing at 8 :30 P.M. on a proposal to change the name
of a portion of South Street from West Street to the dead end
at Rte . 93 from South Street to Eames Street.

The people present expressed a desire to retain the word
"South" in any new proposed name.
It was moved, seconded and voted to lay this matter on the
table.
Read note from Superintendent relative to using fourth class
bulk mailing permit to send water billa.
It was moved, seconded and voted not to use this method
to send water bills.
Read note from Superintendent relative to establishing
a sidewalk construction program for 1959 in view of the hearings
held on June 15, 1959.
It was moved, seconded and voted to build the following
sidewalks in 1959.
1. Linden St. - Both sides - Several individual lots.
2. Charles St. - Southerly side - Main St. to Pearl St.
3. Lowell St. - Easterly Side - Puritan Rd . to Beverly Rd .
Received letter from Recreation Comm. requesting Board
to purchase prizes at a cost of approximately $50.00 for the Fourth
of July Field Day.
Read note from Superintendent relative to same matter.
It was moved, seconded and voted not to purchase prizes
due to low Park appropriation.
Read note from Superintendent that Campanella & Cardi
are removing gravel from the so called Ordway lands without a
permit from the Board of Appeal and that the Town requested a
Restraining Order in Superior Court which was denied.
Received letter from Old South Methodist Church
requesting the use of the Common and Memorial Park during recess
of the Vacation Church School.
It was moved, seconded and voted to approve the request
and to suggest that it be done in such a manner that it not inter-
fere with the regular Recreation Program.
Read note from Superintendent that it is rumored that
Campanella & Cardi are trying to buy the Carroll property on
Grove Street.
Received letter from Board Member, Mr. Donahue,
requesting that Superintendent present to Board a list of the
construction inspectors employed by the Town.
' It was moved, seconded and voted to so request the
Superintendent.
Received from Superintendent a resume of information
relative to salaries paid in other selected municipalities, and
a proposed salary schedule for this Department.
It was moved , seconded and voted to take the matter
under advisement so that members would have time to study the
proposal and other possibilities.
Several matters of interest were discussed .
The Board adjourned at 10:20 P.M.
