' The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works
opened on Monday evening, May 18, 1959 at 7 :30 P.M .
Chairman Zanni,, Messrs. Donahue, Florence, Leonard and
Superintendent Welch were present.
The records of the previous meeting were read and
approved as amended by adding that Superintendent reported
verbally at previous meeting that Selectmen have referred matter
of illuminated sign on Common to Town Meeting of June 22, 1959.
It was moved , seconded and voted to write Selectmen
what steps have been taken relative to illuminated sign on
Reading Common.
Mr. Willias: Murphy, Chairman of Personnel Board,
conferred with Board relative to changes in maximums for semi-
skilled and skilled laborers which had been referred to him by
another department.
Mr. Zanni presented a letter he had received from the
Municipal Employees Assoc . requesting a meeting with the Board
soon.
It was moved, seconded and voted to instruct Superintendent

to arrange for a meeting on Thursday Evening, May 2£, 1959 at
7 :30 P.K .
Conferred with a Mr. Kellett of Hunt Street relative
to extension of sewer in Hunt Street. He was informed it is
in program for 1963 .

Received letter from Trancoa Company on Ash Street i
requesting permission to build a folding covered passageway across
the sewer easement to connect an existing building to a proposed
building.
It was moved, seconded and voted to approve the request
subject to the provisions of this Department and the inspection
of this Department .
Received letter frog Security Lodge, IOOF, inviting
persons from this Department to attend 'a lecture on May 26, 1959
given by Mr. Kenneth Sawyer on the subject of underground corrosion.
Received letter from Chief Lames suggesting that South St .
from West St, near the Woburn Town Line to the dead and at
Rte. 93 be renamed Clarigold Street.
It was moved, seconded and voted to hold a hearing
and propose a new name for this section of South St.
Considered general report from Superintendent about a
1959 Sidewalk Constr. Program and listing several suggested streets .
Matter was placed on file pending receipt of further
Information.
Considered note from Superintendent relative to payment
of salaries to employees while on military leave.
It was moved , seconded 'and voted to pay to the employee
an amount equal to his regular town salary for the period involved
less the base pay he receives from the Military Service .
Considered report from Superintendent relative to
condition of Mineral Street Bridge and estimate of cost of repairs

to stringers, wood planking and asphalt planking. Estimate of
repairs is `,110,000.
It was moved, seconded and voted that, because of the
intent of the railroad to abandon the tracks, funds would not be
requested for repairs and that, should it be necessary before
railroad plans are fully determined, to close the Bridge to
vehicular traffic . Further that this vote be publicized .
Considered resume of bids for sewer construction taken
on Thursday, May 14, 1959 at 4:00 P.M . a list of which is
attached hereto.
It was moved, seconded and voted to write the two low
bidders requesting information as to their finances, equipment,
personnel and other related matters.
Considered resume of bids for storm drain construction
taken on Thursday, May 111, 1959 at 3 :00 P.M. a list of which is
attached hereto.
It was moved, seconded and voted to write to the three
low bidders requesting information as to their finances,
personnel, equipment and other related matters.
Read note from Superintendent that Frank Briguglio,
developer of Cherry Lane Drive, stating Mr. Briguglio has agreed
to correct the raw bank conditions at the dead end of Cherry Lane
Drive abutting the Eaton School play area.
Discussed whether or not Department had given Campanella
and Cardi permission to use Strout Avenue for trucking purposes.

Requested Superintendent to check on matter and '
obtain latest copy of decision of Bcard of Appeal.
The Board adjourned at 9:20 P.M.
