The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works
opened at 7: 30 P.M.
Chairman Zanni , Secretary Harrison, Messrs. Donahue ,
Florence , Leonard and Superintendent Welch were present.
The Records of the previous meeting were read and
approved.
Considered note from Superintendent and letter from
Mr. Donahue relative to illuminated sign on Reading Common.
It was informally agreed that it would be advisable
to remove the present sign and hedge and to consider erecting
another type of sign possibly in another location.
' Conferred with the Selectmen relative to two items.
a. The so called rubbish cage on Parker Street.
b. The illuminated sign on the Common.
As a result of this conference it was agreed that
the Board of Public Works would (a) make some kind of a cover
for the rubbish cage and (b) the illuminated sign of the Common
should be removed and later consideration be given to a replace-
ment of some sort and that action be now postponed.
Received letter from Sherwood Homes , Inc. requesting
permission to connect a cellar drain from a new house at Lot 38
Springvale Road to the storm drain in the easement abutting
thereto.
It was moved, seconded and voted to approve the
request subject to the usual provisions.
Considered note from Superintendent explaining that
developers of Reading Terr. had built a house over an existing

ditch without making provision for intercepting the run off
from the ditch creating a flooding condition on some lots ,
and suggesting that developers be recalled to install proper
corrective storm drains.
It was moved, seconded and voted to recall
developers to install proper corrective storm drains in the
Reading Terr. area.
Considered letter from Mr. Donahue relative to
installing sidewalk at 48 Linden Street.
Considered note from Superintendent relative
to installing sidewalks at four locations on Linden Street.
Discussed present block system of sidewalk con-
struction and construction for individual lots. Also discussed
problem where owners wish to ]lire private contractors to in-
stall sidewalks.
Subject matter placed on file pending sending a
letter to Town Counsel asking whether, in cases where owner
build the sidewalks wholly at their expenses, may the Town
accept the sidewalk as a gift and assume future care and
maintenance.
Received petition from one abutter on Woodland
Road requesting that the sewer be extended from John Carver
Rd. to the dead end of Woodland Rd.
Placed on file to be processed in the usual manner.
Considered note from Superintendent relative to
charges made for full water service pipe replacements and the '
lack of any charges for partial water service replacements.

' Superintendent suggested a change in methods of charges
and proposed the following charges :
1. A charge of $3. 50 per foot for all water service
pipe replacements but only for pipe replaced from sidewalk
stop to meter - no charge made for pipe replacement from
main to sidewalk stop.
2. A flat additional charge of $25.00 whenever it
is necessary to replace the corporation cock and gooseneck.
3. A time and material charge for replacing the
shut off in the cellar.
A detailed discussion followed.
It was moved, seconded and voted to approve the
immediately above described charges for service pipe re-
placements effective immediately and to publish the new
proposal in the Chronicle.
Considered note from Superintendent stating that,
as a matter of information, Mr. Amon, the Town Counsel and
Mr. Sartorelli, Counsel for Realty Constr. & Engr. Co.
have had conferences relative to problems at the so called
Chinaman' s Farm development but that no agreement has been
reached about the various details.
The Hoard adjourned at 9t00 P.M.
