HomeMy WebLinkAbout1959-03-30 Board of Public Works Minutes 43 March 30, 1959 The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P.M. Chairman Zanni, Secretary Harrison, Messrs. Florence, Donahue, Leonard and Superintendent Welch were present. Records of previous meeting read and approved. The following members were chosen to serve on the following com- mittees: 1. Recreation Committee - Mr. Leonard 2. Junior High School Com, - Mr. Harrison 3. Park & Recreation Comm. - Mr. Donahue 4. Elementary School Comm. - Mr. Florence 5. School Sites Comm. - Mr. Zanni Received letter from State Department Public Works stating that they agree to use unexpended 1958 allotments for recovering Lowell St. , from Grand St. to Lowell St. in 1959• ' Placed on file until next meeting when Board will review- all relevant letters. Read note from Superintendent relative to request of John Roden, 129 Lowell St. for an abatement on his January 1959 water bill. It was moved, seconded and voted to abate the sum of $11. 00. Considered note from Superintendent relative to.'Town Meeting approval of $75,000 Bond Issue and suggesting that a gravel packed well be constructed in Hundred Acre Meadow at the location of 'Pest Well No.15- It was moved, seconded and voted to install the gravel packed well as immediately above described. Considered note from Superintendent relative to Town Meeting approval of 412,000 appropriation for design plans for the. remodelling ' of the Filter Plant and suggesting that the Board confer with Mr. Bogren about this matter. 44 li It was moved, seconded and voted to invite Mr. Bogren to confer with the Board on the evening of April 13, 1959 at 8:00 P. M. Considered note from Superintendent relative to unpaid Service Pipe Construction bill-for the Community Center in the amount of $686.15. It was moved, seconded and voted to request the Selectmen to make arrangements to pay this bill. Received letter from Town Counsel relative to suit for auto accident based on claim that the accident was based on smoke from Reading dump obscuring vision on Rte 128 on September 19, 1957. Town Counsel requested that Board give him all possible infor- mation. Considered note from Superintendent relative to proceeding with plans for an extension to the Town Garage; Superintendent reported that Mr. Matte, the architect, objected to preparing plans for an exten- sion if the Board, at the same time, was preparing plans for a steel rigid frame extension. . It was moved, seconded and voted to have Mr. Watts proceed with the plans for an extension and to drop the plans for a steel rigid frame building for now. Received letter from Mr. Donahue suggesting that method of assess- . .ing betterments on the second side of corner lots be revised as the present method is intricate and cumbersome. Superintendent explained methods used and illustrated methods on blackboard. Mr. Donahue then withdrew his request. Received letter from Methodist Church requesting permission to i close off Salem Street from Main St. to Lowell Street on Saturday I i I� 4J ' April 11, 1959 from 8:90 A.M. to 5 : 00 P.M. for the purpose of holding a paper drive. It was moved, seconded and voted to approve the request. Board adjourned 10: 00 P.M. Respectfully submitted: Secretary
