HomeMy WebLinkAbout1959-02-16 Board of Public Works Minutes 19 February 16, 1959 ' The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was opened at 7:30 P. M. Chairman Donahue, Secretary Zanni, Messrs. Florence, Harrison, Kilgore, and Superintendent Welch were present. Records of the two previous meetings were read and approved. Received a letter from O'Brien' s Texaco Gas Station, 550 Main Street, requesting permission to remove the small dividing island at the driveway onto Main Street at the easterly side of the station. It was moved, seconded and voted to approve the removal of the dividing island at the expense of the Texaco Company. Received a letter from the Congregational Church requesting ' permission to close off Sanborn Street from Woburn Street to Lowell Street on Friday, September 25, 1959 from 5:00 P. M. to Midnight, and on Saturday, September 26, 1959 from 7:00 A. M. to Midnight for the purpose of holding an outdoor fair. It was moved, seconded and voted to approve the request from the Congregational Church as above outlined. The meeting was temporarily adjourned at 8:00 P. M. to meet s1 the Board of Survey. The meeting was reconvened at 8:30 P. M. Hearing at 8:30 P. M. on proposed acceptance as a public way of a portion of County Road from Lewis Street to West Street. 30 The following persons were present: Edward Knudson Opposed . Isabel Thomas. Signed statement of expenditures fqr 1958 Chapter 90 Maintenanee which is to be submitted to the State Department of Public Works. i 31 1Read note from Superintendent stating that a Mr. Graf of the State Waterways Division and a Mr. Libbey of Utility Engineers had conferred with him relative to commencing work on the design of improvements to a portion of the Aberjona River between Lowell Street and West Street. Considered the suggested sewer program for 1959 a. copy of which is attached hereto and herewith becomes a part of these records. It was moved, seconded and voted to vote by roll call. The vote was as follows: Mr. Donahue In favor Mr. Florence Mr. Harrison Mr. Kilgore Non Committal Mr. Zanni " n Considered tentative suggested sewer program for the years 1960 to 19b3 a copy of which is attached hereto and herewith becomes a part of these records. It was moved, seconded and voted to tentatively approve the proposed program for the years 1960 to 1963. Considered petition filed by certain persons to place the Labor Force under Civil Service. The question will appear on the ballot of March 2, 1959. 3`' N After an extended discussion it was agreed by Mr. Florence, Mr. Kilgore, Mr. Harrison, and Mr. 'Lanni that they would Insert an article in the Reading Chronicle opposing the Civil Service petition and stating reasons for their position. Mr. Donahue stated that he was opposed to the insertion of an article in the Reading Chronicle opposing Civil Service since he felt It was a matter for the voters to decide.
