LMEETING OF THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS OPENED AT
7:40 P.M. IN BOOM 16, MUNICIPAL BUILDING .
PRESENT WERE CHAIRMAN KENNEY, BOARD MEMBERS COCH-
RANE AND FLORENCE AND SUPERINTENDENT WELCH.
MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETINGS READ AND APPROVED.
IN THE ABSENCE OF Na. HODGKINS, I'IR. FLORENCE ACTED AS
SECRETARY.
READ NOTE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT REGARDING PLAN
RECENTLY SUBMITTED BY THE READING REALTY FOR DRIVEWAYS AT
THE APARTMENT HOUSE AT HIGH AND WASHINGTON STREETS.
C MR. FLORENCE MOVED, MR. COCHRANE SECONDED AND
IT WAS VOTED TO TENTATIVELY APPROVE THE PLAN PROVIDED THE
PROPOSED NORTHERLY DRIVEWAY ON HIGH STREET IS ELIMINATED;
THE PROPOSED CENTRAL DRIVEWAY IS APPROVED FOR ONE WAY IN;
AND THE PROPOSED DRIVEWAY TO ASH STREET WILL BE TWO-WAY
AND WILL BE USABLE BY DECEMBER 1, 1967.
THE BOARD RECEIVED PETITION FROM THREE ABUTTORS
AT 149, 150 AND 155 HIGH STREET REQUESTING EXTENSION OF THE
SEWER SYSTEM TO SERVICE THEIR HOMES. THE SUPERINTENDENT
EXPLAINED TO THE BOARD THAT IT WAS PROPOSED TO INCLUDE THE
SECTION YEARS AGO BUT THE THEN OWNERS VETOED THE PROPOSAL.
IT WAS AGREED TO TAKE THE PETITION UNDER ADVISEMENT. THE
REQUEST WILL BE INCORPORATED INTO THE SEWER PROGRAM AND
PROCESSED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
THE BOARD DISCUSSED BRIEFLY AN ESTIMATE OF
$11, 000. 00 FOR THE PROPOSED WIDENING AND SURFACING OF A
PORTION OF HIGH STREET FROM THE RAILROAD STATION TO WASH-
INGTON STREET. THE BOARD WILL VIEW THE AREA ON SUNDAY,
NOVEMBER 5, AT 1 :30 P.M.
THE BOARD MOVED, SECONDED AND VOTED TO APPROVE
REQUEST SUBMITTED BY VICTORIAN TRUST FOR A CONNECTION FROM
HOUSE ON LOT #9 VICTORIA AVENUE TO A PUBLIC STORM DRAIN IN
SUNNYSIDE AVENUE, SUBJECT TO THE DEPARTMENT 'S RULES AND
REGULATIONS.
READ LETTER FROM MRS. VIRGINIA B. GRAMSTORFF, 30
BEECH STREET, REQUESTING AN ABATEMENT ON HER OCTOBER 1 i
WATER BILL WHICH WAS IN THE AMOUNT OF $102. 70. ACCORDING J
TO MRS. GRAMSTORFF, THE HIGH BILL WAS DUE TO A LEAK IN
THE BATHROOM TANK WHICH HAS BEEN REMEDIED. CONSUMPTION HAS
RETURNED TO NORMAL .
MR. FLORENCE MOVED THAT THE BILL BE ABATED TO THE
NORMAL AMOUNT OF $40. 00, MR. COCHRANE SECONDED AND IT WAS
VO TED.
READ LETTER FROM ROBERT W. SAUNDERS, 41 HANCOCK
STREET, REGARDING THE REMOVAL OF THE MINERAL STREET BRIDGE
INSTEAD OF ERECTING A FOOTBRIDGE. THE BOARD DISCUSSED AT
LENGTH INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY THE SUPERINTENDENT IN RE-
GARD THERETO AND HIS ESTIMATE OF $35, 000. 00 TO $45, 000. 00
FOR A TRESTLE. THE BOARD AGREED TO TAKE NO ACTION.
READ LETTER FROM THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS -
WATER RESOURCES CONTROL - WHICH STATED THAT THE PLANS FOR
THE PROPOSED INTERCEPTOR SEWER ARE CONSIDERED TO BE IN ACCORD
WITH MODERN SANITARY ENGINEERING PRACTICE AND ARE APPROVED
AS SUBMITTED; ALSO LETTER FROM FEDERAL WATER POLLUTION CON-
TROL ADMINISTRATION WHICH STATED THAT THE SPECIFICATIONS AND
PLANS ARE APPROVED. ACCORDING TO THE SUPERINTENDENT, THE DE-
PARTMENT MAY PROCEED WITH THE BIDS BUT MAY NOT AWARD THE CON-
TRACT. BIDS ON THE INTERCEPTOR SEWER WILL BE TAKEN ON MON-
DAY, NOVEMBER 27, AT 8:00 P.M. AT THE OFFICE OF THE BOARD OF
PUBLIC WORKS.

TO AWARD THE CONTRACT TO THE LOW BIDDER, ABLONDI-BOYNTON
CORPORATION IN THE AMOUNT OF $15, 557. 00.
READ NOTE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT IN REGARD TO
CONDITIONS ON LONGWOOD ROAD DURING THE INSTALLATION OF THE
C SANITARY SEWER. IT WAS AGREED THAT A LETTER SHOULD BE SENT
TO THE ABUTTORS NOTIFYING THEM OF THE FACTS AND REQUESTING
THEIR COOPERATION.
READ LETTER FROM .TAMES L. GUIDO, 56 SALEM STREET,
REQUESTING RELIEF FROM FLOODING CONDITIONS THAT HAVE OC-
CURRED IN THE PAST, ALLEGEDLY DUE TO HOLES THAT HAVE BEEN
WORN OUT OF THE DIRT ROAD ENTRANCE TO MEMORIAL PARK. MR.
GUIDO OUTLINED HIS PROBLEMS. THE BOARD DISCUSSED THE SITUA-
TION. IT WAS AGREED THAT THE SUPERINTENDENT WOULD WRITE MR.
GUIDO STATING THAT FOR THE SAKE OF TRAFFIC, THE DEPARTMENT
WILL FILL THE HOLES WITH GRAVEL . IT IS FELT THAT THIS WILL
NOT IMPROVE THE FLOODING CONDITIONS IN THE CELLAR AS OUT-
LINED IN HIS LETTER TO THE BOARD, AND MR. GUIDO SHOULD LOOK
FURTHER FOR A SOLVTIONTO THE PROBLEM.
READ REPORT OF PROGRESS FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
ON THE WORK AT HUNDRED ACRE MEADOW UNDER THE R. H. WHITE
& COMPANY CONTRACT. BOARD MEMBERS WILL VISIT THE AREA ON
NOVEMBER 5.
THE BOARD SIGNED THE PAYROLL FOR THE PERIOD
OCTOBER 21 THROUGH OCTOBER 27, AND BILLROLL DATED OCTOBER
27, 1967.
