The Law Committee met at 9.15 P.M. and Joseph D. Knight was elected
Chairman. Samuel H. Davis} Esq. , was appointed Town Counsel for the
ensuing year.
Mr. Davis referred to two cases for personal injuries now pending
and it was moved and so voted that the Town Counsel be aut orized to make
a settlement up to 4200.00, the cases referred to being claims of
loam Theresa Squires and her daughter Mary Squires.
Members present: Joseph ll. Knight, Wendell P. Davis, Arthur S. Cook,
E. M. Halligan, M.D. Irving C. Austin.

Dear Mr. Goodridge :
There are pending against the Town two law
suits in behalf of Theresa Squires resulting from an accident
which ocmirred on September 192 1939 on Main Street in front of !,
Willis Pharmacy in which the claimant' s daughter, Mary, was in-
jured on her way to school as a result of an alleged defect in
the sidewalk at this location.
The alleged place and cause of the injury as
described in notice to the Town am as follows:
PLACE: On that sidewalk of Main Street, Reading, which is adjacent
to the store known as Willis Pharmacy, and numbered 600 Main
Street, and at a point on the sidewalk Approximately 7 feet,
4 inches away in a northerly direction, from the hydrant,
which is practically on the corner of Haven and Main Streets,
and about 10 feet from the wall of said building, further de-
scribing said place as that part of the sidewalk which forms
the curbing and where the two curbstones meet at a place
71 4" north of the hydrant above referred to.
CAUSE: A defect which is about 72,� inches long and with a sudden
drop of about 12 inches.
As a result of the accident the plaintiff claims
to have sustained a fracture of both bones in the right lower arm.
These cases have been heard at the pre-trial
session of the Middlesex Superior Court and are assigned for trial
before Jury on Wednesday April 22, 1942. I shall be glad to have the
Committee consider the question of liability and advise me as to
whether or not they desire to have me negotiate for settlement or
proceed to trial.
