HomeMy WebLinkAbout1964-09-14 Board of Public Works Minutes September 14, 1964 Meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P.M. in Room 16, Municipal Building. Present were Chairman Kenney, Secretary Cochrane, Board Members Leonard and Watt and Superintendent Welch. Minutes of the previous meeting read and approved. The Board adjourned temporarily at 7:45 P.M. to meet as the Board of Survey. The Board reconvened at 8:00 P.M. Read letter from Middlesex County Commissioners in re- gard to public hearing to be held Wednesday, September 23 at 10:00 A.M. in Cambridge for open discussion of questions relating to Public Roads in accordance with the Provisions of Section 1, ' Chapter 81 of the General Laws. Chapter 90 work will also be dis- cussed. The following program was suggested by the Superintendent:- 1. For continued construction of Haverhill Street, the sum of $37,200.00 (State $18,600.00 - county $9,300.00 - Town $9,300-00)- 2. For maintenance, the sum of $4,500.00 ($1,500.00 State - $1,500.00 county - $1,500.00 Town). Mr. Watt moved that the program as outlined above be fol- lowed, Mr. Leonard seconded and the motion carried. Mr. Welch will attend the hearing. The Board considered three applications for sidewalk construction on Mt. Vernon Street between Kingston Street and Bancroft Avenue. Mr. Leonard moved, Mr. Watt seconded and it was voted to approve the request that bituminous concrete sidewalks be in- stalled in front of 21 and 27 Mt. Vernon Street. Read petition from Reading Municipal Light Department for relocation of Pole #36/15 Hartshorn Street, southerly approx- imately 12 feet. It was moved, seconded and voted to approve the request. The Board opened bids at 8:00 P.M. on One ( 1) New Track Laying Tractor with Cab and One-Way Snowplow. Bids follow: - Company Make Bid Timberland Machines,Inc. Bombardier SW48 $4,625.60 It V li Bombardier SW48 4,655.00 International Harvester Co. Intfl Harvester T340A 5,229.00 H. F. Davis Tractor Co. Oliver OC4-31 5,762.40 Bids were taken under advisement. The Board signed Memorandum Agreement with State Depart- ment of Public Works covering work to be done under 1964 Chapter 90 Maintenance. The Board took up the item of awarding of the Water Main Construction contract. Mr. Watt moved that the contract be awarded to the low bidder, Crognale Construction Co. , Inc, intheamount of $321084.00; Mr. Cochrane seconded. A discussion followed. The motion carried. Mr. Leonard 's vote was recorded as non-committal. Public hearing was held at 8:15 P.M. for the purpose of taking an easement for drainage and sewerage purposes southerly of Bolton Street through lands of Goodall-Sanford, Inc. Nobody attended the meeting. It was moved, seconded and voted to approve the taking subject to receipt of signed Release from Damages. ma Li The Board opened bids for cleaning, painting and repair- ing the 530,000 gallon standpipe located on Auburn Street. Leonard, Inc. , Framingham 4,800.00 Paragon Contracting Corp. , Attleboro 9,300.00 S. Rosenthal & Sons, Inc. ,Cambridge 13,730.00 Bids were taken under advisement. Messrs. Kenney and Leonard left to meet with the Town Counsel, Board of Selectmen and Conservation Commission regard- ing excavation at 100-Acre Meadow. Board Members Cochrane and Watt and Superintendent Welch conferred with Messrs. Brigham and Galvin, Subcommittee of the Finance Committee in regard to Preliminary Budget for 1965. Discussed in detail were the consolidation of certain ac- counts in the budget and the status of the Incinerator, Sewer and Garage Studies. Meeting adjourned at 9:45 P.M.
