Meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:50
P.M. in Room 16, Municipal Building.
Present were Chairman Kenney, Board Member Florence
and Superintendent Welch.
Minutes of the previous meeting read and approved.
Messrs. Leonard, Brigham and Galvin ,joined the meet-
ing.
The Board conferred with Messrs. Merry and Ober of
Cleverdon, Varney & Pike, consultants on the Garage Study. Con-
struction is programmed in four phases as follows: -
Phase A - Renovation of burned section, removal
of end wall, construction of.an addi-
tion and fire walls and additional
truck doors $52,000.00
Phase B - Addition of storage space for Highway
Department, enlarged Park Department
area, . integration of Tree and Moth
Department and an enlarged exterior
storage area. . . . . . . . . . . $78,000.00
Phase C - Permanent location of the Highway,
Water and Sewer Departments' storage,
Lantern Repair Room, construction of
a Locker and Shower area, Employeest
Room, New Toilet Facilities and a new

Phase D - Removal of existing exterior wooden
storage sheds, construction of un-
heated prefabricated metal storage
building and the relocation of the
present gasoline and diesel fuel

A detailed discussion followed.
Mr. Leonard was of the opinion that bays should be
erected for dead storage of some of the heavy equipment.
The report and plans were accepted by Chairman Kenney
and taken under advisement. The study will be discussed by the
Board at a future date.
Mr. Leonard brought before the Board the condition of
the banking at 51 Hartshorn Street, alleged result of installa-
tion of a bituminous concrete sidewalk. Mr. Leonard was of the
opinion that a retaining wall should be erected. It was agreed
that the Board Members would view the scene and the item placed
on the Agenda for September 28.
Read list of bids on sidewalk tractors and the
Superintendent's comments; also Mr. Welchts suggestion that an
Oliver Tractor be purchased from H. F. Davis.
Mr. Florence moved that the Oliver 004-31 be purchased
from H. F. Davis at the bid price of $5,762.40 as it meets the
Town's specifications . Mr. Leonard did not second and Mr.
Florence withdrew the motion.
Mr. Leonard expressed his disapproval of the bidding
procedure followed by the Department and the preparation of
specifications. The Chairman agreed to submit the problem to
the entire Board.
Mr. Florence moved the item be laid on the table,
Mr. Kenney seconded and the motion carried.

Read list of bids for cleaning, painting and repairing
the 530,000 gallon standpipe located on Auburn Street. Mr.
Florence moved that the Board await Special Town Meeting action
in October before awarding the contract; Mr. Leonard seconded
and it was voted.
Read letters from and to Dr. James McNulty of Wake-
field in regard to installing an eight-inch main in Hopkins
Street, Reading, and extending into Wakefield to the entrance of
Tarrant Lane to service his proposed rest home. Cost is to be
borne by Dr. McNulty.
Mr. Leonard moved that a full sketch of the situation
be prepared for presentation to the Board at the next meeting,
' Mr. Florence seconded and it was voted.
Read notice from the Board of Selectmen that a Special
Town Meeting will be held Monday Evening, October 26, 19614.
Read statement of opinion signed by Mr. Welch in re-
gard to the excavation of the Ipswich River and effect on water
supply at 100-Acre Meadow.

Town of Reading, in compliance with the provisions of
General Laws, Chapter 30, as amended by Chapter 63 of
the Acts of 1933, hereby certify that the list herewith
contains the names of persons against whom we have made
betterment assessments, together with the location of
