HomeMy WebLinkAbout1964-04-13 Board of Public Works Minutes 39 April 13, 1964 Meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P.M. in Room 16, Municipal Building. Present were Chairman Kenney, Secretary Cochrane, Board Members Florence, Leonard and Watt and Superintendent Welch. Minutes of the previous meeting read and approved. The Board conferred with Paul Sullivan and Thomas Sull- ivan of T. D. Sullivan & Sons Co., low bidders for the 1964 Sanitary Sewer contract. Mr. Leonard moved that the 1964 Sewer Contract be awarded to T. D. Sullivan & Sons Co. , low bidder, in the amount of 4;90,817.00 contingent upon meeting all the legal requirements of the Town of Reading; Mr. Watt seconded and it was voted. The Board discussed at length data prepared by the Superintendent relating to Sewer Department income from 1959 through 1963- Mr. Watt moved that the report be accepted as a point of information; Mr. Cochrane seconded and it was voted. The Board opened bids at 8:00 P.M. on the Sewer Rodder as follows: - C. A. Turner Co. - 1 PHD Stewart Sewer Rodding Machine $3,578.72 J. F. McDermott Co.,Inc. - 1 Flexible Seweroder - Model #SRRS-1 3,895.00 J. F. McDermott Co. ,Inc. - 1 Flexible Seweroder - Model #SOPS-1 3,600.00 J. F. McDermott attended the meeting and explained the mechanism of the machine. 4U Mr. Florence moved that the Department purchase one (1) Flexible Seweroder Model #SRRS-1 at a price of $3,895.00; _ Mr. Watt seconded and it was voted. Read letter from Stephen B. Corrigan and John R. Webster (minors) requesting permission to hold an Antique Show on Reading Common on May 23, and in case of inclement weather, on June 6, 196LE. A nominal fee would be charged the dealers for space and the proceeds donated to the Reading Historical Society for needed repairs to the Parker Tavern. The request was referred to Town Counsel who stated that in his opinion the Common could not be used for any purpose which involves payment of fees or other charges. It was moved, seconded and voted that the request be denied with regret. At this point Mr. Watt left the meeting and the Board adjourned temporarily at 8:30 P.M. to meet as the Board of Survey. The Board reconvened at 9:05 P.M. Read note from the Superintendent in regard to the possibility of assessing betterments for drainage improvements pending an opinion from the Town Counsel relating to the gen- eral question. It was agreed that the Superintendent would ascertain from other municipalities if and what methods are used to determine the assessment for storm drainage improve- ments and sanitary sewers. Read note from the Superintendent stating that the Aberjona River Improvement Project in Reading has been listed by the Waterways Division of the State Departmeit of Public 41 L Works as a 1965 project providing Legislature approves the normal budget. It was moved, seconded and voted that the item be tabled for three weeks to allow the members of the Board to acquaint themselves with the data on the project. Read letter from Mrs. Eugene P. Brown, Co-chairman of the Festival Committee of the Reading Art Association, request- ing permission to hold an Art Festival on Reading Common on June 6 (in case of inclement weather June 13). Mr. Leonard moved that permission be granted, Mr. Cochrane seconded and it was voted. Read letter signed by John W. Polimeno and William J. Koney, Summer Avenue, requesting permission to discharge water pumped from their basements into a pipe common to both houses and connected to the catch basin located in the street and be- tween the respective properties at 633 and 637 Summer Avenue. Mr. Cochrane moved, Mr. Florence seconded and the motion carried to approve the request, the work to be done ac- cording to Town specifications and upon receipt of signed Re- leases from Damages. Read letter from John Pacino requesting permission for the Reading Town Team to use Washington Street ball park on specific dates as outlined; also reconsideration by the Board of Public Works of the request of Austin Preparatory School to use the baseball field at Washington Park on Sundays, L May 3, to and 17. Mr. Florence moved, Mr. Cochrane seconded and it was voted that permission be granted to the Reading Town Team to 42 use the Washington Park baseball field on the requested dates. Mr. Leonard was of the opinion that the Austin Preparatory ' School request should be discussed by a full Board. The Board signed the Billroll dated April 10, 1964. Meeting adjourned at 9:40 P.M.
