' Meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30
P.M. in Room 16, Municipal Building.
Present were Chairman Cochrane, Secretary Watt, Board
Members Hodgkins and Kenney and Superintendent Welch.
Minutes of the previous meeting read and approved.
Read report from the Superintendent on the appraisals
for takings on Haverhill Street and his opinion that the ap-
praisals are very substantial. The appraisals follow:

Mr. Welch made two suggestions: - First, that the
Board ask the State Department of Public Works to redesign the

road so the takings would not be necessary; and Second, that '
copies of the appraiser' s figures be forwarded to the Reading
Board of Assessors.
Mr. Hodgkins moved, Mr. Kenney seconded and it was
voted that the State Department of Public Works be requested to
redesign the road.
Mr. Hodgkins moved, Mr. Kenney seconded and it was
voted to forward a copy of the appraisers report on the C. E.
and M. B. Nitzsche property to the Board of Assessors.
Read note from Mr. Welch which stated that with the
cooperation of two property owners, the Department would be
able to -make a new design for the Sewer Interceptor from Cross
Street to Main Street which would eliminate the necessity of ,
obtaining easements from Mrs. Sides and the New England
Forestry Service. A hearing will be necessary to cover the
new easement area.
Mr. Watt moved, Mr. Kenney seconded and it was voted
to hold the above-mentioned hearing.
Read note from the Superintendent in regard to test
wells in the so-called 100-Acre Meadow area; also, his sug-
gestion that two deep test wells - 125 to 150 feet - be driven.
Funds are available.
Mr. Watt moved that the Superintendent' s suggestion
be followed, Mr. Hodgkins seconded and the motion carried.
It was moved, seconded and voted that a letter be
sent to the employees wishing them a Merry Christmas and thank- '

' ing them for their cooperation during the past year.
The Board signed the following:
Payroll for the period December 10 through December 16
Billroll dated December 16
Betterment Commitment Sheets - House Connections -
Various locations
Meeting adjourned at 7:45 P.M. to meet as the Board
of Survey.

Town of Reading, In compliance with the provisions of
General Laws, Chapter 80, as amended by Chapter 63 of the
Acts of 1933, hereby certify that the list herewith contains
the names of persons against whom we have made betterment
assessments, together with the location of the land benefited
by the imjrovement and the nature and amount of such better-
ment assessment.
And such list is certifiod to you for the purpose
of committing the same to the Tax Collector, as provided by
law.
