HomeMy WebLinkAbout1958-10-27 Board of Public Works Minutes October 27, 1958 Meeting of the Board of Public Works held at 8:00 P. M. 'Chairman Donahue, Secretary Zanni, Messrs. Florence, Harrison, Kil- gore and Superintendent Welch present. Records of previous meeting read and approved. Considered report of Superintendent on status of 1958 Storm Drain Construction program. Approximate $ 30,000 is available. Approxiyate $18, 000 is to be spent on contract and $6,000 by Town Forces leaving approxi- mate 07,000 unallotted. It was moved, seconded and voted to extend the contract of the Dow Co. by lengthening the storm drain in Franklin Street easterly toward Main Street. It was moved, seconded and voted to give the Cross Street culvert and pipe drainage problem primary consideration in 1959 . Considered petition from 86 persons relative to sidewalks on the east side of Pearl Street from Wakefield Street to Charles Street. Con- sidered note from Superintendent relative to present conditions. It was moved, seconded and voted to write petitioners that Board will give ser- ous consideration to their petition. It was moved, seconded and voted to request Finance Committee to transfer $2,5uO from the Reserve Fund to the Consulting Engineers Account with the understanding that• a like amount will be available at the end of the year in the Engineering Account.. Considered letter from Mr. W. F. Spurr, Ace Art Co. requesting that Right-of-Way to Property off Ash Street, known as the Sweetser property, be surfaced by the Town. It was moved, seconded and voted to write Mr. Spurr that it would be necessary to.process a plan through the Board of Survey and the Town Meeting. Also that land takings would be necessary. Considered note from Superintendent about the condition of the Min- oral Street Bridge. Also considered report from Consulting engineer. It was moved, seconded and voted to obtain an estimate of cross bracing nec- essary and to include replacement of bridge in Capital Budgeting Comm. report. 1 Considered note from Superintendent relative to necessary repairs to Filter Plan building. These are primarily of a gunite nature. It was moved, seconded and voted to authorize Superintendent to ' spend $1,800, annually until repairs are completed. Considered note from Superintendent relative to sidewalk construc- tion program in an4near Reading Square and near public buildings. It was moved, seconded and voted to proceed with the work, in the following manner: 1. Hire a contractor to perform excavation and base preparation. 2. Buy all materials direct. 3. Hire a contractor to lay bituminous concrete. 4- Build bituminous concrete sidewalks only. Signed copies of Orders of Taking for lands of Luther and Ainsworth in Revay Meadow. Original signed September 29, 1958. Signed revised copy of minutes of meeting of Sep6ember 29, 1958 con- taining copies of immediately above described Orders of Taking. Considered note from Superint6ndent giving resumer of 0215,000 Wate, Bond Issue. Noce Shows that careful attention will have to be given to expenditure of the balance of funds available. Considered provisions of Chap.� 626 of the Acts of 1958, which is an Act providing that certain meetings of certain public Boards and Commissions shall be open to the public. It was moved, seconded and voted to comply fully with the provisions of Chap. 626 of the Acts of 1958 and to publish this fact.
