Reviewed letter, to Finance Committee outlining suggested revised
water rates and changes revenue, based on proposed 1959 Hydrant Rental fig
' ure of X40.00 per fire hydrant. Held for revision, due to changes voted
this meeting on metered water rates.
Received letter from Waterways Division, State Department of Pub-
lic Works, stating that:
1,. It would be possible to let separate contracts for Culvert Construc-
tion and Channel Improvements-however, Waterways Division would pre-
fer to have all of the proposed work under one contract, as such an
arrangement would probably result in lower prices than if there were
to be two contrapts.
2.. It would not be possible to effect channel improvements with Town
forces, reimbursed by State and Town funds, as this is prohibited
by law.

Received the following letter from the Boston and Maine Railroad,,
yhich hereby becomes a part. of these.minutes:
June 16, 1958
Mr. James T. Putnam ,
Superintendent
Board of Publip Works ,
Municipal Building
Reading, Massaphusetts . .
Dear Mr. Putnam: -
Your letter June 12 regarding replacement of culvert by the Town of,
Reading southeily of Willow Street grade crossing in connection with the
flood flow project of the Aberjona River.
As stated to you by Mr. Spofford in your telephone conversation, the
Boston and Maine Railroad has no way ,of obtaining Federal funds for any
part of such a project. If such funds are to be obtained it would seem
that the Division of Waterways in the State Department of Public Works is
the proper agency to developethis matter.
I would further advise that the Railroad would not consider partici-
pating in the cost of any such venture as the existing culvert fully satis-
fies our needs.
Would further point out that such a project will involve approval
of the plans by the Boston and Maine Railroad, completion of a proper
agreement bafore work can be started and reimbursement to the Railroad for
all expense of flag protection, supervision, engineering, etc.
Very truly yours,
( signed) S. G. Phillips
Vice President-Engineering

Received following report from Acting Superintendent:
No. 7
June 20, 1958
LAND TAKING - REVAY BROOK
Mr. George Bogren of Weston & Sampson and Mr. D. L. Maher are both
concerned regarding the second gravel well in Revay Brook Well Field . Well
No. 25, which was originally selected as the site of the second well, has
been found to have over 20 feet of peat above the gravel.
A small island, or esker, on land of Ainsworth, where observation
wells were driven, was found to contain excellent water bearing gravel
and good quality water, from first tests. This land is adjacent to land
already approved by the Board for taking.
Have contacted Mr. & Mrs. Ainsworth, who are willing to convey the
additional It acre of land required for the sum of 000.00.
I recommend this land be acquired by the Town.
Acting Superintendent
Moved, seconded and voted tentative approval of acquisition of
additional land as recommended, pending determination of sustability of
esker for well. Examined Plan submitted by Meadow Brook Golf Club Corpor-
ation as required by Decision of Board of Appeal dated March 22, 1958 in
gravel removal permit. Chairman Donahue authorized to give advise and
comment of the Board of Public Works regarding said Plan to the Board of
Appeal.
Board adjourned at 11:15 P. M.
Respectfully submitted :
