Regular meeting of the Board opened at 7:00 P. M. .
Present were Chairman Donahue, Messrs. Zanni, Florence, Harrison,
Kilgore and Superintendent Putnam.
Minutes of previous meeting read and approved.
Joint meeting held with Selectmen Drew, Calvin, and Sussman. Viewed
proposed parking area between Municipal Building and First Church of Christ,
Scientist, then repaired to, the Selectmens' Office and Discussed estimated
costs of new proposed parking area, proposed improvements to the Reading
Community Center grounds, and otner matters.
Opened bids at 8:U0 P. M. on Furnishing and Placing Bituminous Con-
crete Pavement and Bituminous Concrete Curb on Jacob Way. The following
bids were received:

Received report from Superingendent concerning request from Hill-
crest Realty, Inc., for bonding of Joseph (Private) Way, As considerable
drainage must be installed for this bonding, the matter was taken under
advisement for one week.
Received report from Superintendent concerning approval of Randall
(Proposed) Road, Douglas Burhoe, Developer. Taken under advisement pend-
ing opinion of Town Counsel.
Considered equipment bids at some length. Moved, seconded and voted
to purchase the following listed equipment, at the bid prices noted:

The Superintendent was instructed to impose as a condition of pur-
chase of the P & H Backhoe from Shanahan Equipment Corporation, that a con-
patent demopstrator be assigned. for a period of one (1) work-week to in- '
struct and .school the Town operator of the new backhoe in its operation
and maintenance; and to Investigate the dealers' guarantee of the new unit,
Approved Registry of Deeds Plan under Subdivision Control Law of
Land on Haven Street, owned by Luther G. Howard, H. Kingman Abbott, Sur-
veyor,
Received letter from Board of Selectmen, notifying Board of Special
Town Meeting to be held Monday evening, June 23, 1958, the Warrant of which
will close on Thursday, June 5' 1958. Letter notod.
Approved the following Article, as presentQd by the Superintendent)
for includion in the Special Town Meeting Warrant:
Article : Authority to Selectmen-Aberjona River Damages Indemnity,
Article : Funds for Aberjona River Channel Impro6ement and `Culvert Con-
Struction. ,
Briefly reviewed Suggested Revised Water Rates and Charges. Mr.
Kilgore volunteered to prepare and present a new rate schedule and charge
schedule. Subject matter of this item postponed one week.
Discussed employment of Inspectors for Contract Construction during
Summer Work season.
On recommendation of Superintendent, it was moved, seconded and
voted to employ Edward C. Wright as Inspector at the rate of $2.00 per
hour up to 40 hours per work week, with time andone-half after 40 hours.
Moved, seconded and voted to pay Edward C. Wright $5.00 per week
mileage for use of his own personal automobile on inspection work.
Board adjourned at 10 :15 Y. M.

Works, properly called by action of Messrs, Florence,
Harrison, Kilgore and Zanni, was held at 7:00 p.m.
on June 9, 1958,
Present were Messrs, Florence, Harrison,
Kilgore and Zannl.
A discussion was held of personnel and
salary problems, and it was voted to request the
..mt Personnel Board to advance the salary of the position
of Superintendent of Public Works to a level
commensurate with that of the Manager of the
Municipal Light Department, as was the case in
past years. Also to increase the maximum pap of the '
Civil Engineer ng to $150
per week.

to confer, by request of the Board of Public Wors:a o
the above matters.
By vote of the Personnel Board, it was
established that that Board would present a motion
at the Special Town Meeting of June 23, 1958, to:
1. Raise the salary of the Superintendent
of Public Works as follows
Min: $173,07 Mas: ¢211,53
2, Raise the maximum salary of the Civil
Engineer to &150,00 per week.
It was further determined, in discussion
with the Personnel Board, that the Board of Public
Works had the power to approve the crem!'6arrV#" r
such additional positions below that of Superintdent
as the Board of Public Works might see fit.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 p.m. , 4

of Public Works to the Personnel Board for their
