Regular Meeting of the Board opened at 7:30 P. M.
Present were Chairman Donahue, Messrs. Harrison, Zanni, Florence,
Kilgore and Superintendent Putnam.
Minutes of previous meeting read and approved.
Mr. Clifford A. Johnson, of Johnson Bros. , Sewer Contractors, visi-
ted Board to discuss permanent paving of sewer trenches included in the
1957 sewer contract. , After discussing various methods of excavation, grave-
ling, trench cutting end final paving, it was moved, seconded and voted to
permit Johnson Bros. to:
1. Open, excavate and gravel sewer trench on High Street.
2. Open; excavate, gavel and bituminous-concrete pave Lowell Street imme-
diately, as excavation continues, with no delay between excavation and
paving.
3. Continue bituminous-paving crew on paving all sewer trenches, in order
of precedence as determined by the Board.
4. Terminate all trench paving on the Johnson Bros. 1957 Sewer Contract on
June 21, 1958.
Mr. Johnson agreed to above stated condtions, agreed to deliver letter to
that effect to the Board on May 20, 1958.
Moved, seconded and voted to authorize Superintendent to rent a Jack-
son vibratory Compactor from Hedge & Matthies, of Boston, to be used in com-
paction of utility trenches.
Discussed complaints from property owners abutting Washington Street
Ball Park regarding trespass of batted baseballs and driven golf balls on
their properties, resulting in property damage to their houses and possible
personal injuries. Moved, seconded and voted to post Washington Street
Ball Park, with metal signs bolted to chain link fence, stating that play-
ing of base-ball is confined to the regular established base-ball diamond;
and to post all Parks and Playgrounds "No Driving of Golf Balls" . , and to
write Mr. Sc Mrs. Feeney, 2u Sweetser Avenue, f_ letter outlining the proce-
'dure voted. Superintendent also instructed to officially notify Police
Department regarding this matter, and request their cooperation in enforces
ing same.

Moved, seconded and voted to authorize construction of a Reviewing
Stand as requested by the Board of Selectmen for their use on May 30, 1958.
Opened bids at 9:UO P. M. in Room 19, Municipal Building, on a Carry-
All type truck for use of the Engineering Division. The following bids

Received letter from Albert Jones, Chairman, Congregational (Church)
Fair Committee, requesting permission to occupy Sanborn Street, from Lowell
Street to Woburn Street, including the Community Center Parking Area, on ,
June 6 and 7, 1958. Action withheld, pending clarification of request.
Received petition from G. C. Blaisdell, Jr. , 113 Summer Avenue, for
extension of cannon sewer in Summer Avenue, from near Mineral Street North-
erly to permit connection to the sewer of his property.
Petition accepted, and, as this is deemed an emergency installation,
moved, seconded and voted to hold a Public Hearing regarding the proposed
extension on Monday, May 26, 1958, and, if the extension is voted, to in-
stall said sewer at an early date with Departmental forces, and, as No.112
Sumner Avenue can receive only partial service from this proposed sewer
extension, to withhold Sewer Frontage Assessments on No. 112 Summer Avenue
until such time as the sewer is extended at a suitable depth from Willow
Street to No. 112 Summer Avenue, or at once if the owner of No. 112 .Sumner ,
Avenue elects to connect the premises to the proposed present sewer exten-
sion.
Received letter from Town Counsel Carl H. Amon Jr, enclosing a copy
of a notice to the effect that the County Commissioners of Middlesex County
will hold a Public Hearing in Room 19, Municipal Building, on Tuesday even-
ing, May 27, 1958 at 7:30 P. M . for the purpose of viewing the premises and
further hearing the parties interested concerning the final layout of West
Street, from Longwood Road to Catherine Avenue, prior to 1958 Chapter 90
Construction of West Street. Letter and enclosure noted, and presence of
Board members is requested at this Public Hearing.
Opened bids at 9:30 P. M. in Room 19, Municipal Building on Two (2)
Five-Ton Dump Trucks, Complete. The following bids were received :

Received letter from L. G. Hawes, 42 West Street, regarding recent
construction work on West Street which caused him much inconvenience. Letter
noted by Board, and Superintendent instructed to acknowledge receipt of let-
ter by Board, and regretting the inconvenience caused Mr. Hawes, also stating
that the work in question was executed by Campanella & Cardi, New Route 28
contractors.
Approved Registry of Deeds plan under Subdivision Control Law of land
on Franklin Street, Roland J. Boyd, owner, E. R. Watson, Surveyor.
M.pved, seconded and voted to abate the stun of X30.00 on a Sewer Rental
bill in the amount of $32.06 dated November 1, 1956 on the property of Mr. Wil-
Im J. Knight, Nos. 12-14 Ida Street.

Preliminary Hearing held at 10:u0 P. M. on proposed development of
Randall (Proposed) Road, Douglas Burhoe, Developer. As zoning laws have chan-
ged since original lot layout was made, the Superintendent was instructed to
obtain an opinion from the Town Counsel regarding the proposed development,
prior to action by the Board.
Further reviewed Suggested Revised Water Rates and Charges as proposed
by the Superintendent. Moved, seconded and voted to request the Finance Com-
mittee to hold a joint meeting with the Board of Public Works for the purpose
of discussing Hydrant Rental Appropriations; a special Sewer Construction
Appropriation for payment of withheld percentage payments on sewer contracts;
and other pressing matters.
Received letter from Whitman & Howard, Inc., signed by. C. Roger Rear-
son, ahclosing plans of proposed se W' er construction in Wadsworth,- Tennyson and

Whittier Roads, and showing two designs for sewer construction in this area,

including a sewer outfall for the nsw proposed Junior High School. Moved,
seconded and voted to instruct Whitman & Howard, Inc. , to proceed with Design
No. 2.

Fair. Moved, seconded and voted to issue permit for closing of Sanborn Street
during specified hours, as requested, on June 6 and 7, 1958.
Approved Registry of Deeds Plan under Subdivision Control Law of
land on Charles Street, owned by Frederick BrIDns, H. K. Abbott, Surveyor,
Examined and discussed plans for permanent street paving, berm and
sidewalk construction of Jacob Way, bids to be opened June 2, 1958.
Considered bids on Carry-All type truck for use of Engineering
Division, Moved, seconded and voted to award bid to Blais-Porter Chevrolet
Co. Inc., and to purchase one new 1958 Chevrolet. Suburban, Model 3106, with
Standard Transmission, for the bid price (net cost) of $ 2,000,00
Postponed award of two (2) five-ton truck bids until Monday, June
2, 1958.
