Moved, seconded and voted not to recommend County Road for Acceptance Received the .following letter from the State Department of Public Health regarding the proposed Revay Brook well location, which here*ith be- comes a part of these minutes: January 21, 1958 Board of Public Works Re: Reading-Public Water Supply Reading, Massachusetts Pumping Test Northerly of Gentlemen: Lowell Street , The Department of Public Health has considered the results of a pump- ing test conducted on a group of tubular wells located northerly of Lowell Street and northeasterly of the Boston & Maine Railroad in the westerly section of the town of Reading. The wells were driven to a depth of abbot' 49 feet through sand and gravel and are adjacent to an extensive swamp area. There were no sources of pollution in the immediate vicinity of the site, although a small trash dump was located at the rear of the Sanborn Egg Company about 300 feet from the group of test wells. It is understood that arrangements have been made for this dump to be abandoned . s` 3 Pumping was started on the test well group on November 29 and con- tinued until December 7, 1957. Water, was pumped at the rate of about 320 gallons per minute throughout the entire pumping period . The maximum drawdown of the ground water level at the group of wells being tested was about 7 feet, 4 inches and stabilization was reached during the last twenty- four hours of pumping. During the recovery period the water level recovered about 79 per cent of its drawdown within a 4 hour period. No additional re- covery figures have been made .available to the Department. The results of the analyses of samples of water collected during the test show that the water was free of turbidity, color and manganse, and low in organic matter and iron. The water is of excellent quality for Public water supply purposes. However, it should be noted that exper- ience with ground water in this general area indicates that the iron con- tent of the water may increase with continued pumping. Your board, there- fore, should be prepared to install treatment works for iron removal, if the iron content of the water should increase. The Department approves the installation of permanent works at the site and recommends that a sufficient area of land be acquired to permit proper development. In this regard, the Department recommends that con- sideration be given to the acquisition of additional land which may be used later for future water supply development. Respectfully, ( signed ) C.-Board of Health Worthen H. Taylor Reading Acting Director Division of Sanitary Engineering Weston & Sampson 14 Beacon Street Boston Received the following letter from the New England Fire Insurance Rating Association regarding proposed water supply improvements, which . herewith becomes a part of these minutes: January 23, 1958 Mr. Coleman J. Donahue, Chairman Board of Public Works Municipal Building Heading, Massachusetts Dear Mr. Donahue : Acknowled7ment is made of your letter of January 14, 1958. With the total supply Of 3.25 m.g.d . at the source in conjunction with your present elevated storage facilities, provided the storage tanks are maintained full or approximately full at all times, would meet our requirements for fire flow. We must remind you, however, there are numerous points in the dis- tribution system due to small size of mains which require strengthening in order to deliver suitable fire supply to those points. We believe it should be understood that during the past summer the estimated maximum daily consumption of 2.5 m.g.d, probably would have been greatly exceeded if you had a larger amount of water available at the source. This maximum rate naturally will increase due to added development of dwel- lings and other properties within the towg, but it would seem the leeway of .75 m.g.d , at the source should be ample for the present. Undoubtedly as development of new sections progress it will be de- sirable then to incrQass the amount of elevated storage. ( signed) Very truly yours, Percy C.
