HomeMy WebLinkAbout1957-06-17 Board of Public Works Minutes June 17, 1957 The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7 :30 . P . M. Present were Chairman Johnson, Messrs. Hopkins, Donahue, Zanni, Kilgore and Superintendent Putnam, Minutes of previous meeting read and approved. Signed vouchers and payroll for payment. Received letters from State Department of Public Works regarding allocation of funds for 1957 as follows: Chapter 90 West Street Construc- tion, $15,u00.00; Chapter 90 Maintenance, $15,000.00. Letters? noted. Received proposal from .Gunite Restoration Co., Inc., 595 Broadway, Malden, Mass. regarding restoration of concrete cap and section of walls at the Filter Plant for the sum of $1295.00. , Moved, seconded and voted to accept terms and amount of proposal, and instructed the Superintendent to have the work accomplished when conditions permit. Received request from John E. Selfridge to the effect that he be permitted to record the remainder of Batchelder (Private) Road under a non-conveyance agreement without bonding. Moved, seconded and voted to grant request. Opendd bids at 8 :00 P. M. on a 22 Ton Dump Truck, with body and hoist. Dear Mr. Nesmith: The Board of Public Works of the Town of Reading, on the eve of your voluntary retirement as a Skilled Laborer in the Highway Division of the Public Works Department, wish to take this opportunity to commend you for your diligent devotion to duty during the thirty years which you have been employed by the Public Works Department. During these past thirty years, you have been assigned many arduous and exacting tasks, which you have conscientously, faithfully and willingly . performed. On recommendation of Supt., moved, seconded and voted to permit Lpersonnel to work Saturday, June 29, 1957 at straight time and be per- mitted to not work on Friday, July 5, 1957 . Received written report from Supt, as to progress of the work to June 1, 1957. Report noted. Signed following Orders of Taking of Drain and Sewer Easements on private property: . Timbernsck Ditch Salem St. to Charles St. Winslow Road-Southerly and Easterly from Southerly side. Haverhill Street- from No. 711 Easterly. Milton Road-from Northerly terminus to Wescroft Rd. III Examined and approved for Supt, signature Plan of Land in Reading, Mass owned by F. J. Kiley, Pine Ridge Road. On recommendation of Supt. , moved, seconded and voted to impose Crestriction on the use of water for non-essential purposes, effective at once. Il Received letter from Fire Chief Hugh L. Eames advising of fire hazard and inadequate water for firefighting purposes. Letter noted. Received latter from Whitman & Howard, Engineers, regarding cost of sewer study survey., Moved, seconded and voted to accept, in general, the offer defined in the said letter, but instructed the Supt: to write W.hitman & Aoward and ascertain if the entire survey will be guaranteed for the total amount of $12,000.00, if $6,000.00 is appropriated in 1958 for a further sewer study survey, as stated by Whitman & Howard in a letter to the Sewer Study Committee dated March 1, 1957 . Moved; seconded and voted to purchase a Lincoln K1058 Arc Welder, mounted on trailer, from Lincoln Electric Co. for the bid price of $1467.00 net less $40.00 trade in on old arc welder. Received letter from New England Fire Insurance Rating Association advising of inadequate water supply for proper fire protection in Reading, particularly in the vicinity of Lothrop Road . Letter noted, and Supt. instructed to answer same, to be signed by Chairman. - Moved, seconded and voted to secure alternate bids on sewer con. struction proposals as follows: (a) Vitrified clay pipe caulked cold asphalt or with a poured hot asphalt joint. b) Class 1 and/or Class 2 Asbestos Cement sewer pipe. Supt, reported on request• from James Calvin for a chain link fence abutting his funeral home on Woburn Street, particularly where Security Hall was formerly situated.
