Regular meeting of the Board opened at 7:3U P. M .
Present were Chairman Johnson, Messrs. Donahue, Zanni, Hopkins
and Superintendent Putnam.
Minutes of previous meeting read and approved:
Signed vouchers and payroll for payment.
Received letter from Mrs. Sitar, 168 Pearl Street, and twenty-
four neighbors, requesting the elimination of a blind corner on Pearl
Street, and offering to give land for said relocation. Moved, seconded
and voted to instruct Superintendent to cause an engineering study of
locus to be made, and to prepare relocation for future Town Meeting
action.
Adjourned at 8:U0 P. M. to sit as Board of Survey.
Reconvened at 8:30 P. M. as Board of Public Works.
Reviewed bids on Are Welder, Portable. Postponed action until
next meeting of Board, to permit obtaining further information.
Held public hearing at 8:30 P. M. regarding the proposed loca-
tion of a Municipal Light Department-New England Tel. & Tel. Co. jointly
owned pole on Forest Street, Northerly side, 128 feet Westerly from
Arthur B. Lord Drive. Present at the hearing was Kenneth Gaw, represent-
ing the Reading Municipal Light Department . No abutting property owners
were present. Moved, seconded and voted the pole location as requested,-
and signed order for pole location.
Moved, seconded and voted to permit installation of a power duct
across Ash Street at Christensons green-house as petitioned for by Read-
Ing Municipal Light Department.
Messrs. Herbert Rixon, Chairman, C. Sumner Teel, Secretary, Lee
Donley, member, and John B. Pacino, Director, Reading . Recreation Committ ,
met with Board to discuss several matters regarding Parks, Playgrounds,
and the 1957 Supervised Play Program. After a prolonged discussion of
policy, long range Park improvement plans and other related subjects, it
was agreed that the following items would be accomplished prior to the
opening on June 24 of the supervised play program;
GLEN MEADOW SCHOOL SITE
Cut grass on 1T' acre area, fill depressions, install water fountain,
erect two tables with benches. Area improved to be chosen by Superin-
tendent Putnam and Play Director Pacino.
WADING POOLS
Erect clothes racks on chain link fence at each wading pool.
BIRCH MEADOW PLAYGROUND
Move basket-ball backstops to old tennis courts.
MaIORIAL PARK
Install new metal slide at Memorial Park play enclosure.
Also discussed at some length the proposed plan to grade and seed
the outfield at Birch Meadow Soft-Ball field . Superintendent instructed
to ascertain status of school athletic field renovation.
Discussed cement concrete sidewalk construction and/or maintenance
in the business section of Reading. Superintendent instructed to prepare
estimate and report of same for information of the Board.
Moved, seconded and voted to purchase a 1957 Model F-250 Ford 3/4
Ton Pickup Truck from Carleton & Gray, Inc., of Reading for the bid net
cost of $1,467.00.
Moved, seconded and voted to purchase a 1957 Model D500 Dodge

�I Dump Truck, Perfection Body and Hoist from Classen Bros ., Inc., of
Wakefield for the bid net cost of $3,117.00, plus fish plating at
$70.00, for a total delivered price of $3,187.00.
Received letter of commendation from Alton C. Bennett, Baseball
Coach, Reading High School, expressing his sincere appreciation for the
outstanding condition of the Washington Street Park baseball park during
the past Middlesex League baseball season. ,Letter noted, and Superin-
tandent instructed to post same on garage bulletin board.
Received letter from Ralph P. Hall, Inc., regarding the contract
for Installation of Fluoridation Equipment stating that they had placed
the order for the equipment with B I F Industries on March 4, 1957, were
' advised that shipment would be made by May 14, 1957, and that advice
would be given if any unexpected delays should arise. Letter noted.
Reviewed results of hearing and poll of abuttors on Oak Street
sidewalk extension. Moved, seconded and voted to take no further action
on Oak Street sidewalk construction in 1957.
Received letter from Robert B. Tucker, 68 Longwood Road, Reading,
protesting damage to Longwood Road surface engendered by heavily loaded
gravel trucks hauling from a pit in Woburn owned by Realty Construction,
Inc., and operated by Allstate . Letter noted, and Superintendent in-
structed to contact Mr. Tucker and advise him that Realty Construction,
Inc., have guaranteed to repair the roadway.
Received letter signed by Dorothy C. Partelow, Chairman, Congrega-
tional Church Carnival Committee, requesting use of Sanborn Street be-
tween Lowell Street and Woburn Street on Friday evening, June 7 and all
day Saturday June 8, 1957 for the purpose of holding a street fair. Per-
mission granted, subject to usual conditions of notification of Police
and Fire Depts.
Moved, seconded and voted to petition Personnel Board for 'author-
ity to employ Herbert P. Woodward, 6U Highland Street, Reading as a
Junior Draftsmen, temporary status, at a starting wage of 01.60 per hour.
Moved, seconded and voted to start regular Summer Board Meeting
schedule as of this date. -

Moved, seconded and voted to approve taking of easement for Tim-
berneck Ditch drain, so-called and signed Order of Taking for said ease-
ment from Salem Street to Charles Street, through private property.
