Regular meeting of the Board opened at 7 :30 P. M.
Present were Chairman Johnson, Messrs. Hopkins, Donahue, Zanni, Kil-
gore and Superintendent Putnam.
Minutes of previous meeting read and approved .
Signed payrolls and vouchers for payment.
Held Public Hearing at 8 :00 P. M. in Boom 19, Municipal Building,
on petition of Reading Municipal Light Dept. to install a direct burial
cable for the transmission of electricity on Ash Street, Easterly side,
from the Municipal Light Dept. Power Plant to the site of the proposed Tran-
sition-Trancoa Plant Southerly of Cross Street, on land now or formerly of
Walter E. Johnson. The following persons were present at the Hearing:

No objections were voiced as the the location in the street of the proposed
cable.
Moved, seconded and voted to issue permit for street opening for
cable, in sidewalk area, subject to usual restrictions.
Transitman William McBrien of the Engineering Division appeared be-
fore Board to discuss his salary as Transitman and Acting Chief of Surveys.
Superintendent instructed to confer with Civil Engineer Pagano on this
matter.
Following appointments for Board members to serve on special and rou-
tine committees were moved, seconded and voted :
Incinerator Study Committee-Harold J. Kilgore, Jr. ,
Junior High School Building Committee-Walter S. Hopkins, Jr.
Recreation Committee-Domenick Zanni, Jr., Members,
Superintendent authorized to attend meetings of Rec-
reation Committee on request.
Received sketch, estimate and report from Superintendent relative
to proposed Bear Hill Road storm drain. Discussed other drain locations
at some length. Superintendent -instructed to prepare additional data an
storm drains for presentation at the next Board meeting.
Reviewed Srontage assessment sheets on several streets on which
sewer extension hearings are to be held on April 29, 1957 .
On request of Town Counsel, it was moved, seconded and voted to
recommend abandoe¢nent of a five-foot strip of Salem Street for •use of
the Old South Methodist Episcopal .Church abutting the former Center School
property. ,
Received notice from Board of Selectmen regarding the closing of
the Warrant on kril 25, 1957, for the May 6,1957 Special Town• Meeting.
Approved Article for Special Town Meeting Warrant, which recommends
the acceptance of' Chapter 718 funds for construction of a portion of
Summer Avenue.
Moved, seconded and voted and signed Orders of Taking and/or Sche-
dules of Betterment Assessments for the following streets;
Birch Meadow Drive Extension-Access road for elementary school
Sturges (Private) Road-Betterment Acceptance
Gleason (Private) Road (Portion only) -Betterment Acceptance
Richards (Private) Road-Betterment Acceptance
Tamarack (Private) Road-Betterment Acceptance

Received letter from Barbara (Mrs. Glen P. ) Woodbury, Fair Chairman,
Junior Unity Club, Unitarian Church, requesting permission to use Summer
Avenue, from Woburn Street to Temple Street, for a Street Fair on Saturday,
May 25, 1957 between the hours of 10:00 A. M. and 5:00 P. M . Voted per-
mission.
Received request from John Daly to effect a grade change on a por-
tion of Henzie (Private) Street. Superintendent instructed to prepare and
hold grade change hearing.
Received report from Superintendent as to estimated cost by State
Department of Public Works of West Street Chapter 90 Construction. Report
noted.
Mr. Kilgore wished to be recorded as having moved that the Superin-
tendent be instructed to perform no construction in connection with the
Trancoa water main until definite authorization with respect to same is
received from the Board as a whole.
