The regular meeting of the Board at 7:30 P. M.
Present were Chairman Johnson, Messrs Donahue, Zannt and Super-
intendent Putnam,
Minutes of previous meeting read and approved.
Signed vouchers and payroll for payment.
Moved, seconded and voted to start summer board meeting schedule
beginning May 28, and meeting on alternate Monday nights through June,
July and August.
Received report £ran Superintendent regarding .the Brook Street
Drainage problem. Superintendent reported that he had visted the
locus with Superintendent DeFoe of the Wakefield Public Works Depart-
ment and had agreed on a joint engineering survey and study of the
' situation.
Received report from Superintendent in regarding sand for the
filters. Report received and noted.
On recommendation of Superintendent; moved; seconded and voted
to purchase 150 Trident Meters from the Neptune Meter Cc; and 50
Gamon Watchdog Meters from the Worthington-Garcon Meter Co.
Selectmen Latham and Drew appeared before Board to discuss the
possibility of widening South Street or the taking of Jacob Way as
access roads to the business C Zoned area Southerly of South Street.
After some discussion it was voted to hold an informal hearing on
Monday evening, June 11, 1956 at 8:30 P. M. and notifying the abutting
property owners on South Street from Main Street Approximately 1400
feet Westerly; which would' be Westerly of No.. 305 South Street of
the hearing, and invite them to attend for an informal discussion of
their feelings of the relocation of South Street.
The Boards of Selectmen and Public Works also discussed con-
ditions on High Street near Jadem Terrace and the situation regarding
the Town of Reading Town Dump and the informal rsquest of the Town
of Wakefield, to use the John Street Dump,
Received letter from Chairman of Sewer Study Committee request-
ing a Joint meeting with the Board of Public Works on Thursday evening
May 31, 1956.
Due to previous commitments by individual $oard of Public Works
Members it was found impossible to meet with the Sewer Study Committee
as requested. Board moved, seconded and voted that they would meet
with the Sewer Study Committee when the schedule is possible.
As the next regular meeting of the Board of Public Works will
be on Monday evening June 11, 1956. Superintendent instructed to
furnish reports, plans etc, as requested by Sewer Study Committee for
their meeting on May 31, 1956.
Signed the following listed Registry Deeds Plans for approval
by the Superintendent:
Kenneth & Lyreen Mackellar - Lot A3 Walnut Street
Edward C. Small - Lot 25 Dana Road
Martin Butt - Lots D & E Main Street
Elmer R. Batchelder - Lots A & B Nelson Ave.
Benjamin M. Hartshorn w Lots 1, 2 & 3 High Street
Superintendent requested permission to bid a Material Spreader,
Bids to be open June 11, 1956. Permission granted.
On recommendation of Superintendent it was moved, seconded and
voted to purchase a Ingersoll-Rand Gyro Flo Air Compressor from Hedge
& Mathies Co. for the bid price $8,965.00.

® On recommendation of Superintendent it was moved, seconded
and voted to purchase a Dodge Model H 2 ton truck Chassis and, Cab
.from Classen Bros. of Wakefield for the bid price of $2,186.00.
plus Fish plating D Frame at $75.00 for a total of $2,261.00.
Received report from Superintendent regarding Contractor
Chris Coviello' s request for additional funds for his 1955 side-
walk construction contract. Moved, seconded and voted to leave
' subject matter of request to the discretion of the Superintendent.
Received verbal report of progress of A. C. Construction
Co. Sewer Contract on Willow Street.
Received letter from Melven Cummings; President of the Addison-
Wesley Publishing Co., requesting that an 8" water main be installed
in an easement from Englund Road to the Addison-Wesley property, On
recommendation of Superintendent voted to grant this request and in-
structed Superintendent to prepare the necessary easements and releases
therefore.
On recommendation of Superintendent it was moved, seconded and
voted to purchase a Elgin Street ging Street Sweeper from E. J. Bleiler
Equip. Co, for the bid price of $7,900 less 1% discount provided de-
livery is made on or before Friday, June 1, 1956.
Received letter from Reading Recreation Committee outlining
their 1956 summer schedule and requesting the use of all parka Qs is
normal. Subject matter of request left to the discretion of Super-
intendent.
' As bids on Street and Drain Construction had been advertised
to be open on Monday June 4, 1956. , Secretary Coleman J. Donahue

agreed to meet with Superintendent Putnam and open bids on that even-
ing.
