HomeMy WebLinkAbout1956-05-14 Board of Public Works Minutes May 14, 1956 The regular meeting of the Board opened at 7:30 P. M. Present were Chairman Johnson, Messrs. Donahue, Hopkins, 'Lanni and Superintendent Putnam. - Minutes of the previous meeting read and approved as corrected. Signed vouchers and payrolls for payment. As required by vote of the Annual Town Meeting in March 1956, the following Board of Public Works Members were appointed to the fol- lowing comnitteet,s: Coleman J. Donahue to the Sewer Study Committee, Harold D. Kilgore Jr,,' to the Park .and Recreation Study Committee, Domenick Zanni, Jr, to the .Recreation C=4ittee. Permission ,requested by the Superintendent and authorized by the Board to advertise for 'a Powered Flexible Cable Bucket Type Sewer Clean- ing Rig; bids to be open Monday, May 21, 1956. Bid opening on 4 Betterment.. Streets was held at 8 :00 P. M. Only was one bid received, that from Lawrence Sand and Stone Company which approx- imately $2,000 more than the available funds. Moved, seconded and voted to re-advertise street bids to be opened on June 4, 1956. Work to start within 14 days from day of opening; and that a $1,000. certified check be posted with the bid. Hearing held at '8:30 P. M. on Change of Grade on Indiana Avenue. MacLean, 14 Martin Road, Reading, Mass.-Y Nitzsehe,4,3 Haverhill Street, Reading, Mass.-Y The Board received a report from the Superintendent on the , status ; of the survey of the Ipswich River Valley and its relation to the Town of Reading Water Supply, The Board voted to incorporate the report in the minutes of this meeting and are as follows; The survey reo_uested to determine the value of the Ipswich River to the Town of Reading water supply is well underway, on a large scale, The Waterways Division of the State Department of Public Works were requested by the Board to make this survey. They in turn re- quested help from the U. S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey Division, who for about one year have been gathering data on subter- anean water levels, by measuring existing wells, setting depth recor- ding gauges, etc. Recently they have also been making test borings to depths of 70 feet with an auger-type drilling rig, to determine soil conditions. Starting next week a crew from Weston Ooservatory are starting a seismographic survey to determine rock formations which might out- line the pre-glacial channel of the Ipswich River, Half stick of dynamite will be detdnated in a predetermined pattern in Reading, Lynnfield, Middleton, North Reading and Wilmington, and the results plotted. The survey will probaoly not be completed until late in 1956. U 6 297 ' Received report from Superintendent regarding the transfer of $5,000, requested from the Finance Committee to be credited to the Snow and Ice Salary. Account. The Finance Committee having only $ 25,000, in the reserve fund voted to transfer the sum of $ 2,800. to the Snow and Ice Salary Account. Superintendent requested permission to ask for bids on W@ter Meters on Monday, May 21, 1956. Permission granted. Received request from Mr. Leo McDonald of South Street for a One Year Extension on his cash bond which he had posted on May 16, 1955 for construction of a proposed road off South Street. Board . voted a one year extension to expire May 16, 1957. Bid.s were publicly opened and read at. 9:30 P. M. on a 3/4 Ton ' Pick-up Truck Chassis, Cab and body. May 21, 1956; at ,which time a further engineering study will , have been made of the grade change. 295 ' Received report from Superintendent of a telephone requebt from Mi . Melbourne Cummings of Addison-Wesley Company requesting that a 6e water main extension be made in an easement from Englund Road to his piopertg through lands of Englund. He would then erect a water tower and install a pump to provide necessary fire protection to his new building. Orrecommendation of Superintendent it was voted to postpone action of this matter for one week pending a further report from the Superintendent or: the proposed widening of South Street and an estimate cost therefore. Superintendent reported that Realty Construction and Engineering Cc , had posted performance bond for the construction of 800 feet of Arcadia Road; all of Stewart Road and all of Shelby Road and request releases on their recorded agreement for these three streets, Board ' instructed Superintendent to prepare release. Mr. Alexander and Mr. Morand of the Louie A. Alexander Co. t1.en exnibited to the Board a motion picture of the Wayne Street Sweeper it action and requested permission of the Board to demonstrate a Wayne Street Sweeper on Reading Streets sometime the following week. Offer accepted by the Board . Signed orders of taking of corner rounding in 2 locations as fellows: corner of Middlesex Avenue and Vine Street; corner of Pleasant Street and Eaton Street.
