April 30, 1956
' The regular meeting of the board opened at 7:30 P. M.
Present were Messrs, Donahue, Hopkins, Zanni and Superintendent
Putnam, In absence of Chairman Johnson, Mr. Hopkins was elected Chair-
man Pro Tem,
Minutes of previous meeting were read and approved.
A Hearing was held at 8:U0 P. M . on the Extension of Sanitary
Sewer in Willow Street from the Sewer Pumping Station to the intersection
of West, Willow and Summer Avenue. The following listed abutting pro-
perty owners were present,. who expressed their opinions as noted .

Sewer Extension taken under advisement by Board following hearing.
A Hearing was held at 8 :30 P. M . on a Municipal Light Department
underground conduit on Lowell Street opposite Plymouth Road. Present
were Manager Gil Stanford of the Municipal Light Department and William
Whalen representing the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company.
No aoutting property owners were present and no objections were heard
by the Board. Voted to permit installation of conduit as petitioned for
and signed the necessary papers.
A hearing was held at 8:45 P. M. on a Municipal Light Department
Pole .Location on Prospect Street on northerly end of road. Present
' were Manager Stanford of the Municipal Light Department and Mr. Whalen of
the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company. No abutting property
owners were present, no objections were heard by the Board. Board voted

to grant permit for pole location, '
Sealed Bids were opened at 9:00 P. M. on a Mechanical Street
Sweeper. The following list of bidders and bids were taken under ad-
visement by the Board.

A. C. Construction Co. of West Peabody, Alton C. Newton, owner.
StGred Orders of Takir-g azi Schedule of Betterments Assessments for
6 Betterment Acceptance Streets as follower Martin Road, Pine Ridge Road,
Margaret Road, Rachel Road, Grant Street and Indiana Avenue.
Received report from Superintendent of deficit in Snow & ice Pay-
roll account. Voted to request Finance Committee to transfer 05,000.00 from
Reserve Fund to Snow & Ice Payroll Account for necessary funds to off set
deficit and to furnish funds for the Pall of 1956.
Received note from Superintendent requesting permission to bid an
Air Compressor, a Two-Ton Truck without body and a Back-Hoe attachment
' for Town Owned H F Hough Pay Loader on May 7, 1956. Request granted .
Reviewed a list of Sewer Hearings to be held May 7th and dost
sheets for each as follows: West Street, California Road, Indiana Avenue
and Oak Ridge Road.
Received report from Superintendent regarding the automobile
accident on Willow Street at which he appeared as a witness in Lowell
Superior Court. The Town was found not liable in every allegation in
the court case.
Examined Registry of Deed Plans for Superintendents' signature
as follows under the sub-division control law.

Stanley Peva-Lowell Street, corner Bancroft Avenue-Not approved on re-
commendation of Superintendent.
Received note from the Superintendent regarding employment of an
' inspector for sewer and drain contract work. After some discussion it
was voted to instruct the Superintendent to contact a Reading resident
who has been formerly used for that work and if sand resident

is not available to advertizd for an inspector in the Rgading Chronicle. ,
Received report from Superintendent of the death of Albert R.
Maines, an employee of the Water Department, with a recommendation that
certain departm;nt personnel be permitted to attend Mr. Maines funeral,
on Wednesday Mb.y 2. Attendance of Department Personnel at Funeral, left
at Superintendents' discretion.
Board voted to proceed with installation of Willow Street Sewer.
Board adjourned at 11:00 P. M. - -
