Heading, Mass. , August 1, 1955
The regular meeting of the Board opened at 7:00 P. M.
Present were Chairman Kilgore, Messrs. Hopkins, Donahue, Johnson,
Zanni and Superintendent Putnam.
Accompanied by Mr. C. Nelson Bishop of the Reading Chronicle Press,
the Board inspected a number of departmental construction projects
including Memorial Park, drain installations, road construction, sewer
construction and Hunt Field.
Returned to room 14, Municipal Building at 8:40 P. M.
Opened bids at 8:45 P. M. on cubic yard tractor-shovel.
Following listed bids received, publicly opened and read:

Reconvened at 9:15 P.M. as Board of Public Works .
Received letter signed by James A. Johnson at ux, 70 Charles St.
and Stanley L. Staples, 72 Charles Stre-t, requesting water service pipe
renewal to their properties at a special rate, because of certain
mitigating circumstances. On recommendation of Superintendent, voted to
secure easements from property owners for relocation of water service,
and to install a new 1 1/4" service to serve both houses for the sum
of $1.50 per lineal foot, plus fittings.

neceived letter from Arthur Marchlnko, 151 Walnut Street,
requesting interview with Board to discuss drainage problem in his
property. Board voted to set up meeting with Mr. Marchinko on
Monday evening, August 29.
Hearing at 9:30 P. M.onlinstallatlon of an underground conduit
of the New England Telephone and Telegraph Co, on Haverhill Street
for service to the guided missile launching area. Present were Mr.
Whalen of Telephone Co. No objection being raised to the installation,
It was voted to grant petition.
On recommendation of Superintendent, it was voted to hold hear-
Inge for sewer extension on County Road, from Howard Street to Weacroft
Road, and on Lothrop Road, from opposite Wescroft Road to summit man-
hole, in anticipation of sufficient balance in the Sewer Construction
appropriation to install these mains.

Received sewer extension petitions signed by thirteen home owners
on Hampshire Road and thirty-one home onwers on Lawrence Road, repres-
ented by Secretary Coleman J. Donahue. Petitions accepted, noted and
placed on file for future action.
Received report from Superintendent on critical drouth condition
regarding the municipal water supply, and excessive daily pumpage
presently being experienced. On recommendation of Superintendent„voted
to insert article in The Reading Chronicle issue of August 4, 1955 re-
questing citizens to practice water conservation during the present
critical situation.
