The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P.], .
Present were Chairman Kilgore, Messrs. Johnson, Hopkins, Zanni and
Superintendent Putnam.
Minutes of previous meeting read and approved.
Hearing at 8:00 P.M. on sewer extension on Bancroft Avenue South-
erly of Lowell Street. Mr. Warren F. Charles the petitioner and the
only abutter affected, was present, and stated that he no longer desired
the sewer extension. Board voted not to extend sewer on Bancroft Avenue,
as petitioner had withdrawn petition.
Received letter from Mr. Ralph Lake, Jr. , requesting that Lafayette
Road be processed through Board of Survey. Board voted to hold informal
preliminary hearing of all abutters on Lafayette Road to ascertain if
abutters desire a Board of Survey layout of Lafayette Road.
Received letter from Mrs. Marchant, 16 Vine Street, citing a
hardship case of sewage disposal, and petitioning for extension of the
sanitary sewer in Vine Street as soon as possible. Board voted to accept
petition, place same on file, a nd extend sewer as requested when funds
are available.
Received ietter of appreciation from Mrs. Richard Jackson of
Unitarian Church Junior Unity for assistance tendered by Department in
recent Country Fair project.
Received letter of appreciation from Faculty Manager of Reading
High School expressing appreciation of assistance given by Department
during recent base-ball season at Washington Street Ball Park.
Received approval from Personnel Board to employ Edward Wright as
Transitman from June 19 to September 15, 1955 at the hourly rate of 41.65.
Received letter from citizens on Pearl Street protesting use of
Pearl Street School lawns as base-ball fields. Board instructed Super-
intendent to write answer to letter, expressing sympathy with complainants,

but that the basis of the complaint is not within the jurisdiction of
the Board of Public Works in any respect,
' On recommendation of Superintendent, voted to temporarily postpone
action on awarding Tractor-Shovel bid,
On recommendation of Superintendent, voted to purchase following
3/4 Ton Trucks:
From Carleton & Gray, Inc, -One-3/4 Ton Ford Chassis and Cab---$1,371.00
From Laing Chevrolet -------0ne-3/4 Ton Chevrolet Truck-Complete-1,513.90
On recommendation of Superintendent voted to construct two field
houses of cement blocks, with reinforced concrete roofs, one each in
Washington Street Ball Park and Birch Meadow Playground.
On recommendation of Superintendent, voted to replace existing l;"
and le water main in Bolton Street with 6" main and to install a fire
hydrant at Easterly end of Bolton Street.
Hearing at 8:30 P.M. on extension of sewer in Summer Avenue, from
Boyce (Private) Street Southerly. Present were the petitioners, Mr. &
Mrs. R. A. Bates of 247 Summer Avenug, who recorded themselves as
being in favor of said extension, and who signed a sewer house connection
application. Board voted to extend sewer in this location.
Received note from Superintendent advising Board of request from
Mr: Marchinko, Walnut Street, relative to piping brook in rear yard area
of his house, presently being erected, and also advising Board that
brook has been piped through land of William Warren, adjacent to Marchinko,
Voted to request easement through land of Warren, premit Marchinko
to pipe brook at his expense, and obtain easement from Marchinko.
Hearing at 9:00 P.M. on storm drain easement Easterly of Main Street
' and Southerly of Hopkins Street. Present were the following listed
abuttors, who recorded their expressions of opinion as noted:

Mr, Magno owner of corner lot, agreed to install 15" R,C . drain
pipe and erect two manholes at his expense. Board voted to take easement,
and signed Order of Taking for recording in the Registry of Deeds.
Received petition for extension of sanitary sewer in Mt, Vernon
Street opposite Kingston Street, signed by several citizens. Petition
accepted, and placed on file for processing in usual manner.
Board instructed Superintendent to have inserted in the Reading
Chronicle a notice to ditizens to the effect that no abatements would
be given consumers for water wasted by outside faucets being left active
while home-owners were away on vacation.
Moved, seconded and voted that Chairman or Secretary sign all
communications sent by this office to State agencies, and Town Boards,
elected or appointive, that the Clerk of the Board is to sign all notices
of Board decisions to residents of the Town, and the Superintendent is to
maintain his own correspondence with other Department heads.
Moved, seconded and voted to hold Board of Survey Hearings on the
Third (3rd) Monday of each month, Board of Public Works meeting to be
held the First, Second, Fourth, and Fifth Mondays as regular meetings,
and special meetings as required.
Board voted unanimously to indefinitly postpone action on appoint-
ment of Highway Foreman, and instructed Superintendent to submit such
other names of candidates for Highway Foreman as he deems advisable.
Moved, seconded a nd voted to prepare report for next Special Town Meeting
requesting opinion of Town Meeting with respect to acceptance of streets
laid out for future access to undeveloped land.
