The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7;30
P.M.
Present were Chairman Kilgore, Messers, Johnson, Zanni, , Donahue,
and Superintendent Putnam. ,
Minutes of previous meetings read and approved . ,
Received letter from Mr. Joseph B. Iverson, 83 Hanscom Avenue,
requesting information as to his sidewalk assessment. .
On recommendation of Superintendent, voted to abate one-half of
Mr. Iverson' s 1954 sidewalk assessment, which would be $37.50 due to,
an apparent misunderstanding of Mr. Iverson' s application.
Received letter from personnel Board, confirming the appointment
of Ernest R. Watson, as Assistant Superintendent, Board of Public Wprks,
at a starting salary Of $90-10 weekly; and also confirming the new
maximum weekly salary of Assistant Superintendent at $105.00 per week,
as requested by the Board.
Received petition from several abuttors on Hillside Road, requesting
abatement of their street frontage assessments, under Chapter 80, Section
5, General Laws, it being their contention that Hillside Road was
constructed for access to the new Senior High School, for the general
advantage of the community rather than the individual property owners.
Voted to send each petitioner a letter citing action of town
meeting in instructing Board of Public Works to assess betterments for
construction of Hillside and other roads, that betterments assessed. were
only token assessments, and that in opinion of Board amount. assessed is
fair and equitable.
Public hearing at 8:00 P.M. on acceptance of Lothrop (Private)
Road as a public town way under the Betterment Act.

Voted to recommend acceptance of Lothrop Road under the Betterment
Act.
Voted also to construct Lothrop. Road at a grade other than the
approved grade, and to hold a change of grade hearing on February 14,
1955.

Mr. Daniel J. Harrington, 4 Evergreen Road,Asigned by 44 residents
of Evergreen Road, Timberneck Drive, Charles Street, Wakefield Street, '
and Tamarack Road protesting the type of housing development now being
constructed on Richards (Private) Road, as they contend it will greatly
decrease the value of their properties.
Petition taken under advisement.
Voted to invite the Board of Selectmen and Building Inspector,
recipients of like petitions, to a joint conference on February 7,
to discuss problem outlined in petition.
Received petition for extension of sanitary 'sewer in Jere (Private)
Road. Voted to accept petition and place on file for processing in
usual manner.
Received petition for acceptance under the Betterment Act of
Jere (Private) Road. Voted to accept petition, and to hold public
hearing for acceptance as soon as survey and plans can be prepared. ,
Received additional petition for sanitary sewer extension in
Lothrop (Private) Road. Voted to wept petition and place on file for

processing in usual manner.
Received petition for acceptance under the Betterment Act of
LMargaret (Private) Road. Voted to accept petition, and process same for IIS
acceptance in March, 1956.
Received petition for extension of sanitary sewer in Woburn Street,
to No. 297 . Accepted application, voted to process in usual manner and
install sewer as soon as practicable.
Voted to abate excessive water bill of Helen C. Harris, 59 Oak
Street, to $10.00, due to fact that Departmental forces used water from
her service for construction purposes, and as a recognition of her
co—operation.
Voted to approve relocation of New England Telephone & Telegraph
Co„ Reading Municipal Light Dept. pole on Glen Road, Northerly side,
near Hancock Street.
Note read from Superintendent reminding Board of hearing at
County Commissioners office in East Cambridge on Tuesday, Peb . ,1,1955,
on relocation of West Street.
Voted to re-assess property of Kenneth R. Johnson, 94 Oak Street,
relative to sewer frontage assessments. Mr. 'Johnsonts assessment on
Oak Street has been changed to an assessment on Pine Ridge Road, and
an abatement of 9P25.75 is hereby voted.
