HomeMy WebLinkAbout1954-11-18 Board of Public Works Minutes November 18, 1951+ A Special Metting of the Board of Public Works was held this day, opening at 7:30 P.M. Present were Chairman Kilgore, Messrs , Hopkins , Donahue, Johnson and Assistant Superintendent Putnam. Discussed sidewalk problem at some length. Examined map of Reading showing existing sidewalls, their composition, and areas where no sidewalks existed. It was the consensus of opinion of the Board that permanent type sidewalks should be installed primarily abutting schools , churches and public buildings , business and other locations on main thoroughfares . Instructed Assistant Superintendent to prepare estimates for budget purposes of cost of construction of permanent type sidewalks abutting schools, public buildings and other vital areas requiring sidewalks, and total liniar feet of permanent type sidewalks now applied for; these 1 figures to be summarized with the estlmated cost thereof and included in 1955 budget. Moved, seconded and voted that a much larger sum be sought for construction of bituminous concrete sidewalks in the 1955 budget, and that such sidewalk construction be let out to contract in 1955. These sidewalks shall consist of contiguous sections on the same side of each street, and shall be in lengths as determined by public hearings on sidewalk construction. Moved, seconded and voted that until further notice no sidewalk and/or granite curbing applications will be accepted, and a notice to that effect published in the Reading Chronicle. Discussed proposed 1955 salary schedule at some length. Postponed final action until meeting of November 22, 195+.
