. The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
7:30 P.M.
Present were Chairman Pro Tem. Donahue , Messrs, Hopkins, Lanni,
and Assistant Superintendent Putnw. .
Minutes of previous meeting read and ap^roved.
Received letter from Personnel Board relative to fintmial reim-
bursement for overtime worked by salaried employees during a declared
state of emergency, ( such as the past hurricane situation) , requesting
a statement of the number of overtime hours worked, by weeks of
salaried employees, and any suggestions the Board of Public Works might
have on this subject in order that an article might be inserted in a
Special Town Meeting warrant as a provision to the Wage and Salary
Classification Plan to cover such situations.
' Voted to submit list of names and hours worked of Assistant
Superintendent in Charge, Hi-hway and Water Department Foreman, and
Pumping Station Engineer, with recommendation that they be reimbursed
for declared state of emergency work by being paid time and one-half
after 40 hours each work-i:eek less Foramens paid overtime.
Received letter f rom citizens protesting drainage conditions on
King Street and Glen Road, Taken under advisement, pending survey and
report from .ISSiStL.nt Superintendent.
Received letter of commendat on from Lyman C. Sprague, Granger
Avenue, expressing appreciation for aid during Hurricane "Edna".
Request received f rom Por. Robert Harding, 152 Oak Street, relative
to cellar drainpermit to catch basin. Voted to permit connection, with
1 usual stipulation.
Ps. John _riguE;lio developer of Rachel Road, appeared before Board
to request change in previously approved storm drainage on Rachel Road.

Voted to permit change, as shown on Board of Survey Plan A-17-51.
Voted to permit employees to work on Saturday, October 9, 1954, '
and close the Departments on Monday, October 11, thus gaining s three
day holiday. '
Voted to request Board of Selectmen to appoint Pumping Station
Engineer, John D. LoUanis a Special Police Officer for all Town of
Reading Water and Sewer Pumping Stations and their vicinities.
George M. McSheehy, developer of Mark Avenue (off Grove Street)
appeared before Board to request permission from the Board to start
construction of Mark Avenue as approved , prior to bonding Mark Avenue.
Permission granted by Board .
Assistant Superintendent reported, that it might be possible to
obtain gravel from Town Forest for road construction purposes.
Permission has been obtained from Town Forest Committee, and he
requested that he be allowed to interview Board of Selectmen for their ,
approval. Permission granted .
Assistant Superintendent informed Boardthat he had been requested
by Board of Selectmen to serve as Civilian Defense Director for the '
Town of Reading, subject to Board of Public Works consent, Members
present gave consent.
Voted to omit Board meeting on October 1'1. Next meeting to be
held October 18, 1954. '
