1954-06-14 Board of Public Works Minutes
June 14, 1954 The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P.M. Present were Chairman Kilgore, Secretary Donahue, Messrs. Hopkins, Johnson, Lanni, Assistant Superintendent Putnam, and Philip Welch. Minutes of previous meeting read and approved, Mr. Hopkins delegated by Board as representative to confer with Selectmen and Army Engineers relative to use of Town land on Bear Hill for "Nike" guided missile control center. Letter received from Board of Selectmen announcing that a Special Town Meeting would be held on June 30, 1954. Letter received from Board of Selectmen regarding sale of fiftyII foot strip of land to Walker, of Wakefield. Voted to write letter to Selectmen, releasing strip, subject to certain conditions. 3 li Received letter from Board of Selectmen regarding possible enlaagement of playground area at Hunt Memorial Field. Voted to withhold action for the time being. Adjourned at 8:00 P.M. to sit as Board of Survey. Reconvened at 9:OU P.M. with Mr. Roger Pearson, representing Whitman & Howard, Consulting Engineers. Discussed at some length Bagarella Construction Co. sewer contract, 0. Venici & Sons Road and Drain Contract, etc. Voted to lay sufficient thickness of Type D, resurfacing, under Barrett Co. Contract, on Oakland Road, to meet elevation of existing drainage structures. �. Discussed at some length possibility of constructing Hartshorn Street, from Bancroft Avenue to high school grounds. -2- Conference at 9:30 P.M. with Chief Hugh L. Eames, of Fire Department, who made several specific requests regarding extension of water main At Town Dump, extension of water main on Summer Avenue, etc. Request taken under advisement, pending investigation and report by Assistant Superintendent. - Considered bids for gasoline powered 3/4 yard shovel with backhoe attachment, and voted to purchase from Crane Service & Equipment Co., a bay City 45 at a net price delivered at Reading of 620,550.00, less 2; discount, as per their bid dated May 14, 1954. Reviewed storm drain bids opened on June 7, 1954- Awarded drain contract to ©. Menici & Sons, of Peabody, Mass. , at their bid price of $22,019.84• Voted to re-employ Harold J. McSheehy as Bupervisary Employee at rate of $1.66 per hour,. subject to approval of Personnel Board. Voted to authorize Assistant Superintendent to attend the June Conference of the New England Water Works Association at Rye, New Hampshire, on June 17, 1954. Voted to abate entrance fee of $50.00 as applied for by Massa- chusetts Builders, Inc., on premises owned by them at 88 Main Street, Reading. Received letter from a number of property owners on Bolton Street requesting that Bolton Street be accepted as a town way. Accepted petition, and placed on file pending necessary usual procedure.
