HomeMy WebLinkAbout1954-05-24 Board of Public Works Minutes May 24, 1954 The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P.M. Chairman Kilgore, Messrs. Donahue, Hopkins, Johnson, Zanni and Superintendent Welch were present. Following Bituminous Concrete Sidewalk Applications received, approved and placed on file: Howell Gaw - 14 Belmont Street Joseph Prendergast - 95 Hanscom Avenue John Brown - 35 Harrison Street Oscar David - 211 High Street James Newman - 14 Plymouth Road Temporarily adjourned at 8:00 P.M. to meet as Board of Survey. Reconvened at 8:45 P.M. Conferred with Mr. Koerner and Mr. Kuonanis of South Street relative to drainage conditions in the rear of their property abutting Sturges Road Board will investigate. Considered note from Superintendent relative to several personal matters. It was moved, seconded and unanimouly voted to accept with regrets the resignation of Superintendent Welch and to commend him for his services to the Town over the past nineteen years and to extend the best wishes of the Board to him on his new position. It was moved, seconded and unanimously voted to pay to Superintendent Welch his full salary up to and including June 24, 1954, and to paythis sum to him on the payroll dated June 4, 1954. Voted to appoint Mr. James Putnam as "Assistant Superintendent in charge" of Department effective at 4:30 P.M. on May 28, 1954, and to notify all employees of this action and to publish a copy of this vote in the Reading Chronicle. Received letter from the Birch Meadow Development Committee requesting considerable information relative to the future plans of the B.P.W. for -2- - the Birch Meadow area, Voted to furnish Committee with Beall basic plan recently completed and to furnish more detailed information later. Received_ letter from School Committee stating that they do not i contemplate requesting the transfer of land in Birch Meadow now developed and used and which comes under the jurisdiction of the B.P.W. Placed, on file. Received letter from Selectmen stating they have received complaints relative to pond of water between Charles Street and Main Street. Board will investigate. Received letter from Selectmen relative to proposed sale of land off John Street on the east side just north of the Wakefield Line and also a letter from the Selectmen relative to the proposed sale of land off John Street on the West Side between the Gas Company plant and the IB.P.W. Garage. Voted to write Selectmen as follows; 1. Board agrees basically that sale of land may be proper. 2. Sale of land on east side would reduce effective life of dumping area by three years. 3. Sale of land on west side would reduce effective life of dumping area by four years . 11. In case either of both sales were made the Town would eventually, and in less time than anticipated, have to expend funds to make other arrangements for the disposal of rubbish. 5. If land on west side is sold the sale should not include any land lUO feet south of the B.P.W. Garage between John Street and the railroad tracks. Received letter from Whitman & Howard listing bids received for Bituminous Concrete for Oakland Road and stating both low bidders are -3- qualified companies. Voted to accept the bid of the Barrett Company for Type R-I at � $7.30 and to notify Whitman & Howard and to prepare contracts, MI Considered note from Superintendent stating that Mr. Neilson and Mr. Landells of Bond Street have agreed to allow contractors to cross their properties to gain access to the storm drain project providing that the driveways and lawns are put back in good condition. Received letter from John Fleming stating that he is resigning his position as Land Surveyor in this Department effective June 4, 1954. Received letters from Robert Everett,- 93 Pine Ridge Road and Samuel Rowry, 26 Curtis Street, both requesting permission to connect cellar drains to the existing public storm drains.
