HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-05-29 School Committee Minutes - Executive Session READING SCHOOL COMMITTEE Reading Massachusetts Executive Session Ma 29 2002 CALL TO ORDER Chair Twomey called the meeting to order at 5:35 p.m. in the Superintendent's Conference Room. Present were School Committee Members Cavicchi, Dahl, Griset, McFadden, Russo and Twomey. Also present were Superintendent Harutunian, Associate Superintendent Richards, Town Manager Hechenbleikner and Town Treasurer Beth Klepeis. TEACHERS' CONTRACT Dr. Hamtunian advised that Beth Mepeis was here to discuss annualizing the 3/1 split for the first year of the teachers' contract. He advised that annualizing the increase would make less work for the payroll department. Ms. Klepeis explained the process that would be used to annualize the increase. Ms. Cavicchi moved to approve the Superintendent's recommendation to annualize the 3/1 split from September to lune Mr. Griset seconded the motion The vote was 7-0 Ms. Cavicchi, Mr.Dahl Mr. Griset. Mr. Hechenbleikner, Mr. McFadden Mr. Russo and Mr.Twomey. He discussed a three-year plan to bring the salaries to the middle of the comparable towns. Executive Session 2 May 29 2002 tr RECESS At 5.55 p.m. Ms. Cavicchi moved to recess and reconvene after regular session Mr Gnset seconded the motion. The vote was 6-0 Ms. Cavicchi Mr. Dahl Mr. Griset Mr. McFadden, Mr.Russo and Mr. Twomey CALL BACK TO ORDER At 7:45 p.m. Chair Twomey called the executive session back to order all School Committee Members,Dr. Hamtuman and Town Manager Hechenbleikner were present. The Committee continued to discuss ways to bring the bargaining units salaries up to the average of the Middlesex Towns. Mr. Russo stated that he liked to use market replacement as a resource and believes in merit pay to reward the best workers. This matter is a subject of Executive Session Mr. Dahl asked Dr. Harutunian to obtain a legal opinion regarding whether an e-mail sent out containing information regarding an executive session item is a public record and whether merit pay for teachers could be discussed in executive session after negotiations have been completed.
