HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-07-24 School Committee Minutes - Executive Session READING SCHOOL COMMITTEE Reading,Massachusetts Executive Session ul 24 2002 CALL TO ORDER Chair Griset called the meeting to order in the Superintendent's Office at 6:35 p.m. Present were School Committee Members Cavicchi,Dahl, Griset, McFadden,Russo and Twomey. Also present were Superintendent Hamtunian and Town Manager Hechenbleikner and Associate Superintendent Richards. NEGOTIATIONS—EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANTS Dr.Hamtunian reviewed the educational assistants contract with the Committee. Mr. Russo stated that he would not be voting in favor of this contract because of the percentage increase. Mr. Hechenbleikner stated that he would be voting against the contract due to the percentage increase. Mr. Twomey moved that the School Committee approve subject to ratification by the Reading Educational Assistants Association the draft of the agreement between the Reading School Committee and the Reading Educational Assistants Association effective 7/1/02 and expi ine 6/30/05 with the modifications as they appear in the documents presented. Ms Cavicchi seconded the motion The vote was 5-2 Ms Cavicchi Mr.Dahl Mr. Gnset Mr. McFadden and Mr.Twome voted es Mr. Russo and Mr. Hechenbleikner voted no Mr. Hechenbleikner left the meeting. CUSTODIAL SICK LEAVE Dr. Hamtunian updated the Committee on a custodian's medical condition. Dr. Hamtunian advised that the custodial union has requested authority to donate approximately 430 hours of sick time to this custodian. Mr. Twomey stated his concern that Dr.Hamtunian approved vacation pay for the custodian from FY03 for use in FY02. He stated that he understands the humanitarian reason for doing so but questioned whether using FY03 funds in FY02 created an accounting issue. 4 Executive Session 2 ul 24 2002 Dr. Harutunian stated that FY03 funds were not used. He stated that because it was so close to the end of the fiscal year, he did approve using vacation from FY03 but that the funds to pay the custodian were in FY02 as the custodian's salary was budgeted for an entire year. Mr. Dahl moved to accept the Superintendent's recommendation to grant the custodian an additional 430.32 sick hours to be donated by volunteer members of the custodial unit. Mr. Twomey seconded the motion The vote was 6-0 Ms Cavicchi Mr. Dahl Mr. Griset Mr. McFadden Mr.Russo and Mr.Twomey, PENDING LITIGATION—DEP Dr. Hamtunian updated the Committee on the DEP appeal. MINUTES Ms. Cavicchi moved to approve the minutes of May 13 2002. Mr. Twome seconded the motion. The vote was 6.0 Ms. Cavicchi Mr. Dahl Mr. Griset Mr. McFadden, Mr. Russo and Mr. Twomey. Ms. Cavicchi moved to approve the minutes of May 20 2002 Mr. Twomey seconded the motion. The vote was 6-0 Ms. Cavicchi Mr.Dahl Mr. Griset. Mr. McFadden, Mr. Russo and Mr. Twomey. Ms. Cavicchi moved to approve the minutes of May 29 2002 Mr. Twomey seconded the motion. The vote was 6.0 Ms. Cavicchi Mr.Dahl Mr. Griset. Mr. McFadden,Mr. Russo and Mr. Twomey Ms. Cavicchi moved to-Approve the minutes of June 6 2002. Mr. Twomey seconded the motion. The vote was 6-0 Ms. Cavicchi Mr. Dahl Mr. Griset, Mr. McFadden Mr. Russo and Mr.Twomey. Ms. Cavicchi moved to approve the minutes of June 12 2002 Mr. Twomey seconded the motion. The vote was 6-0 Ms. Cavicchi Mr. Dahl Mr.Griset,Mr. McFadden,Mr.Russo and Mr. Twomey. Ms. Cavicchi moved to approve the minutes of July 1 2002 Mr.Twomey seconded the motion. The vote was 5-0-1 Ms. Cavicchi Mr. Dahl Mr. Griset Mr. McFadden Mr. Russo voted yes and Mr. Twomey abstained Executive Session 3 ul 24 2002 ADJOURN At 7:25 Mr.Twomey moved to adjourn Ms Cavicchi seconded the motion The vote was 6-0 Ms. CavicchiMr.Dahl Mr. Griset Mr. McFadden Mr.Russo and Mr. Twomey.
