The meeting was called to order by the Chairman at 8.10 o'clock.
The records of the meetings of July 11th and August 10th were read and
approved.
This meeting was called to give the School Committee an opportunity
to present further plans for school housing. The Committee was represented
by Mr. Holcomb, Mrs. Hartshorn and Dr. Wakeling. Mr. Holcomb covered much
`%W of the ground already covered by Chairman Coolidge at the previous meeting.
This was for the benefit of the members present who were absent at that time.
Mr. Holcomb stated that no information was yet available regarding the
obtaining of money through the Emergency Finance Board. there was con-
siderable discussion and Mr. Holcomb answered several questions put to him
by members of the Finance Board.
Ift' *It was voted that the Finance Committee approve the school house build-
ing program as presented.
It was voted to hold the next meeting Tuesday August 22nd.

Merrill, Ellison, Devaney, Crooker.

Finance Committee Meeting August 22, 1933.
The meeting was called to order at 8.05 o'clock.
The purpose of this meeting was to vote upon the warrant for the
Special Town Meeting August 29th.
The Board of Selectmen, Chairman Leman and Mr. Morrison, were first
ftr heard on Article 2, Soldiers' Benefits and presented an additional budget
for the balance of the year of $6,800.00, made up as follows:
Soldiers' Relief $6,000.00
State Aid 300.00
Military Aid 500.00
The manner of dispersing Soldiers' Aid was explained by Chairman
Leman and several questions were asked and answered.
The Board of Public Welfare next appeared, Mrs. Leman and Mr. Side-
bottom. The Welfare Department presented an additional budget for Charities
'► and Aid amounting to $40,550.00 made up as follows:
Administrative Expense 550.00
Aid Board & Care 30,000.00
Temporary Aid 9,000.00
Old Age Assistance 1,000.00 Total $40,550.00

The School Comm,Ittee next appeared, Chairman Coolidge, Mrs. Hartshorn,
and Mr. Holcomb. he Chairman presented figures based upon the con-
servative estimates and stated that a 12 room building for elementary grades
could be built for $93,000.00 not including equipment. It was estimated
that by using desks and other equipment taken from the buildings to be
vacated, this building could be furnished Por about $4500.00. The
previous estimate of $7,000 for alteration of the Highland School to provide
additional rooms was aghin named as the amount of the cost. The matter
of kinancing through the Emergency Finance Board was discussed but no
definite information was available upon which to base any positive recommends
tion. Mr. Theodore P. Berle wished to speak upon the school building
project and was heard at some length on matters relating to the housing
conditions of the lower grades and also upon the possibility of providing
needed space without a new building at this time.
Mr. S. J. Watts of the Planning Board presented Article 7 calling for
an appropriation of $500.00 for the completion of the Town Map. He explained
the need of such a map and the uses which could be made of it by the various
departments of the Town.
Executive Session.
The records of the last meeting were read and approved subject to the
insertion of a note regarding the vote on the school project at the meeting
of August 15.
It was voted that $50.00 be transferred from the Reserve Fund to
Election Expenses.
Art. 2. It was voted to recommend the appropriation of $6,800 for
Soldiers' Benefits as follows:
Soldiers' Relief $6,000.00
State Aid 300.00
Military Aid 500.00
Art. 3. It was voted to recommend the appropriation of $30,550.00
for Charities and Aid made up as follows:
Administrative Expenses 550.00
Aid, Board & Care 20,000.00
Temporary Aid 9,000.00
Old Age Assistance 1 000000

The school building project was discussed at considerable length
but as the hour was late and more information was to be obtained, it was
voted to adjourn and meet for a final discussion of the matter Friday
evening, August 25th.
