The meeting was called to order by the Chairman at 8.10 o'clock.
No quorum was present.
The School Committee represented by Chairman Coolidge, Holcomb,
Hartshorn and Stembridge, were present to put before the Committee a
plan for the matter of increased school house accomodation. Mr. Coolidge
`�. first took up the report of Professor Davis made in 1930 and with that and
with the aid of a pin map showAds the trend of the school population and
its relation to the present school buildings. He argued that the eastern
part of the Town was most in need of an elementary school and mentioned
the Car Barn property on Salem Street, the Hunt factory land at the lower
end of Pleasant Street and the Town Home property on Pearl Street. Plans
were shown from specifications by Professor Davis made by a local architect
and one from Boston. The estimated cost of an elementary building was
$93,000. He also spoke of a possible addition to the Highland School
at a cost of $7,000.
The plans of the Committee contemplated the elimination of the Centre
SchooCas a school building and using it for school executive offices; the
possible elimination of the Lowell Street School and making it a neighbor-
hood school; and the same plan for the Union Street School.
The entire project depends upon the Towns ability to obtain a grant
and loan of funds from the Federal Government under the National Industrial
Recovery Act.
Some of the articles which had been brought in for the warrant for the
Special Town Meeting were briefly discussed and it wasoted to meet again
with the School Committee on Tuesday, August 15th. .he Clerk was in-
structed to stress the importance of all members of the Finance Committee
being present as any action on the school project must be decided without
delay.
