HomeMy WebLinkAbout1933-06-06 Finance Committee Minutes Finance Committee Meeting April 17, 1933. This meeting was called as provided by Section 2, Article 6 of the Town By-Laws, for the election of a Chairman. Mr.Robert B. Mount was nominated by Mr. Knox, and the nomination seconded by Mr. Haley. No further nominations being made, Mr. Mount was declared elected, by acclamation. After taking the Chair, Mr. Mount referred to the vote taken at the annual Town Meeting relative to the investigation of the so-called store of the Municipal Light Department by the Finance Committee. Suggestions were called for as to when and how the investigation should be made. The following appointments to sub-committees were announced by the Chairman: BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS: Mr. Connelly, Chairman, Mr. Haley and new members Mr. Merrill, Mr. Currell and Mr. Crocker. Selectments Committee: Mr. Briggs, Chairman, new members Mr. Roberts and Mr. Crocker. Meeting adjourned at 8.50 o'clock. Members present: Robert B. The meeting was called to order at 7.50 otclock by Chairman Mount, who stated that the meeting was called primarily to ascertain if the investigation of the Light Department store should be conducted by the Committee with the help of an outside audit. A letter was read frdmthe Chairman of the Board of Selectmen in response to a request that the Selectmen give an opinion as to entailing expense for the Investigation. Z�he Chairman called for a discussion of the matter. Mr. Devaney stated that in his opinion the audit should not be conducted by the same firm who makes a yearly audit of the Light Department accounts. The opinion was expressed that the Light Department should furnish figures pertaining to the store expenses for the past four or five years and it was the sense of the meeting that such figures by obtained and sent to the members of the Committee for study, and that a meeting be called later. The following transfers were voted from the Reserve Fundt Election & Registration Expense $330.00 Insurance Account 174.07 June 6, 1933 Meeting Continued. Members present: Chm. The meeting was called to order at eight o'clock. The following transfers were voted from the Reserve Fund to respective accounts: Land Court Expenses $100.00 Town CounseL's Expenses 150.00 Treasurer' s Expenses 1001,00 The Chairman then introduced the subject of the Light Department investigation and referred to a report from the Department concerning the cost of the store which had been sent to each member of the Finance Board. There was considerable discussion on the report and the general question of the Light Department Store and upon the advisability of employing a certified public accountant to report upon the figures sub- mitted and make such investigation as the Committee should require. It was voted that the Chairman appoint a committee to confer with the Municipal Light Board to obtain figures relative to the store operated by the Department upon which to base conclusions and that the sub-committee report to the Finance Board at a later date. The following committee was appointed: Chairman William A. Connelly, D.M.D. `r John L. Devaney G. Lawrence Roberts Edward J. Scott Edward W. Briggs The Clerk was directed to sent' a letter to each member of the Finance Committee giving the names of the sub-committee and also to urge any member who had any information or recommendations concerning the matter in hand to send such to Chairman Connelly.
