Reading, Mass. , November 26, 1951
The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
7:00 P.M.
Chairman Hopkins, Messrs. Donahue, Calvin, Harrison, Walker,
and Superintendent Welch were present. -
Received letter from Employees suggesting they work Saturday,
December 22 , 1951, so that they can be off Monday, December 24, 1951,
because Xmas Day falls on Tuesday, December 25, 1951.
Voted to allow all employees a day off on Monday, December
24, 1951, without time being made up with the provision that this
day off is not effective if any work of an emergency nature occurs.
Received letter from State Department of Public Works contain-
ing a list of bidders for Chapter 90 Charles St. Const. project.
Voted to award contract to the low bidder, S. Rotondi &
Sons of Stoneham, at the bid price of $13,936.50.
Voted following pole location:
Lowell St. - Southerly Side - Pole 53/60a moved 18
feet - westerly
Voted permission to Harry E. Malinsten to connect a private
storm drain in his land off Lowell St. to a public storm drain
running through private lands from Lowell St. to Hartshorn Street..
Following Bituminous Concrete Sidewalk Applications received,
approved and placed on file:

Received notice from Finance Committee approving transfer
of $1,600 from the Reserve Account to the Snow & Ice Account for

expen es.
Hearing at 7 :30 P.M. on proposed drain easement off Summer
Avenue through lands of Herbert E. & Ruth S. Cloudman. Easement
is 10 feet wide and 53 feet long on the easterly side of the
property abutting lands of Lila G. Merrill.
No one present .
Voted to take easement as above described and to sign
taking when prepared by Town Counsel.
Temporarily adjourned at 8:00 P.M. to meet as Board of
Survey.
Reconvened at 8:45 P.M.
Conferred with the following employees who represented
all the employees:
Messrs. William Miller, James Putnam, Ernest Watson,
Richard Dugan and Irving Nesmith
They presented a letter from their organization (Local
1639 of the Federation of State , City and Town Employees) which,
in effect, requests a flat 10 percent increase in all salaries .
The petition was discussed as were other minor matters.
Conferred with the following listed persons relative to
drainage conditions at the intersection of West St. , Willow
St. , and Summer Avenue.

was discussed at length and in detail and
from many angles both justified and unjustified.

The Board agreed to give the matter serious consideration
and to perform remedial work as soon as funds permit.
Voted to hold next regular meeting of Board on Monday,
December 10, 1951.
Voted to hold additional meeting at the home of Mr. Hopkins
on Sunday afternoon, December 2, 1951, at 2 :00 P.M.
Discussed possible 1952 Salary Schedule.
Board adjourned at 11:30 P.M.
