'The meeting was called to order at 8 ofclock by the 6hairman. The
records of the last meeting were read and approved.
The budget of the Board of Public works was first taken up. Article
26 on Storm 'Nater Drainage was presented. This estimate of x8,993.56 was
recommended at the meeting of ?ebruarp 25th and rescinded. Lie. Killam
presented a drawing, showing the drains needed in 1932. He stated that the
Board of Public "Orks found that none of the work could be deferred as pro-
perty owners were veru insistent that relief be given. the matter was
discussed et some length when it was voted on motion of Air. Briggs and
seconded by [;'r. Devaney that Y51000 be recommended for Storm "'ester Drainage .
The Sewer Department was next considered. "Tihile no appronristion from
the tax levy on account of sewer construction and maintenance was celled for,
the opinion was freely expressed that the hoard of Public Works should not
undertake any considerable new construction this year and that the receipts
should be applied towardthe payment of bonds due in 1932 in order to reduce
the tax levy.
'�I e Board of Selectmen, Ohm. Morrison, Sweetser and Leman, app,eared and
presented Article 29 and recommended that of the amount called for, .�p32,915.84,
the sum of ;.321
915.84 be raised from the tax levy of 1932 and that the balance
be paid at the rate of $)3,000 per year from 1933 to 1942. Under !article #13
The Board of Selectmen stated that there was a possibility that main Street
would be made a thru way be the State Highway Commission in which event the
Town would not be obliged to provide traffic signs. Under Article 29 the
Chairman stated that the Board would not contemplate the installation of
s,-stem of signal lights in Re-ding Square s.t this time . ne felt that if the
Square was re-surfaced this year some conduit should be laid at this time to
prevent the necessity of digging up the Square in the event the signsle were
later installed.
Mr. Morrison referred to certain reductions in the budget of the
Board of Selactmen and while he recognized the necessity of reducing appro-
priations, he felt that the hoard of Selectmen were in a better position to
decide where the reductions could be made. Speaking for ;the Selectmen, he
expressed willingness to accept the reductions totaling $2100 and requested
that the Board be given until Thursday evening to again go over the budget
and st^te what amounts originally called for could be reduced.
The School Department budget was next considered and after considerable
discussion it was moved by PAr. Devaney and seconded by Mr. Higgins that
."P35,000.r)n be recommended for expenses of the School Department for 1932.
^.fter considerable debate, this motion was withdrawn, the opinion being quite
general that the School Committee should be informed of the proposed reduction
and their answer received.
Chairman Mount spoke briefly on the i:unicipal Light Department affairs
and stated *.hat probably something definite would be prepared for the next
meeting.
Under Article 29 it w^s voted to recommend $700 for laying conduit
in Reading Square.
Under Article 11 it, was voted to recommend that i�2, 915.84 be included
in the tax levy of 1932 and. tyke balance be apportioned over a period of ten
years beginning in1933.
Under Article 12 it was voted that 4511 be recommended for the pur-
chase of an automobile for the Police Department.
