HomeMy WebLinkAbout1932-02-23 Finance Committee Minutes Meeting February 23, 1932. The meeting was called to order by the Chairman at S o'clock. Being a public meeting the Chairman invited any persons to present whatever of public interest they might wish to discuss with the Committee. The only persons present, other th5n the members of the Finance Committee, and-Clerk, were Mr. Geo. Larrebee and Town Clerk Millard F. Charles, with rfr. Rooney and Mr. Bishop representing the press. ' r. Larrabee again presented School Department matters more particular- ly the cost of the school system and presented a. mass of figures to show that school costs in Reading were in excessofthe average for the whole State and certain groups of cities and towns. lie also went into the matter of the curriculum. He answered every auestion put to him by the members of the Committee. Mr. Charles next appeared and in opening his remarks expressed surprise ® that the citizens, especially those who so freely criticize civic affairs, should neglect such an opportunity to appear before the i''inance Committee and discuss matters of public interest. He called attention to Article 25 and stated that in his opinion this project could well be deferred.. He also spoke of need of drsinaee through ' e-ding Square in order that cellars in business buildings could be properly drained. He commented upon the matter of valuation of property which he felt was not properly assessed in many cases. He also spoke of the policy of the Town accepting portions of streets only partially laid out, especially such streets as were not through ways . He also stated that in his opinion the assessment of better- ment to property owners on Libby Avenue was a hardship which should not have been imposed. He also spoke on Storm hater Drainage. At the conclusion of the public hearing which closed about 10.30 P.m . a general discussion was held but no votes were taken. Adjourned 11.05 Y.M. Members present: Chm.
