HomeMy WebLinkAbout1932-01-26 Finance Committee Minutes Meeting January 26, 1932 . The meeting was called to order at 8 o'clock by the Chairman. The records of the last meeting were read and approved. The Chairman read an article concerning municipal expenditures and the increasing tax burden which are contributing causes of depression as building is undoubtedly retarded by existing conditions. Mr. Killam announced that the Schootl Committee was waiting to appear before the Finance Board. Discussion of other matters was deferred and the School Committee presented their budget for 1932. Chm, Coolidge, Dickie t Gordon, Spencer, Hartshorn, Tanner, Supt. Safford were present. Chairman �r Coolidge in discussing the budget stated that the, increase in salary estimate was occasioned by the regular annual step-up in teacher' s salaries. He referred to the work done on the Junior High School grounds and the plans for further development. Each item of the budget was taken up in detail and Chairman Coolidge explained the various estimates and answered all questions put to him by various members of the Committee. The School Committee was dismissed at 9.30 P.M. Mr. Killam, Chairman of the Sub-Committee on the board of Public Works stated that the sub-committee had held sessions with the Board end had gone over the budget with great care. Since the original budget was presented the item of �p4,000.00 for Salem Street had been stricken out and the appropriation for sidewalk construction had been reduced from : 12,000.00 to . 10,000.00. The estimate for construction in Heading Square had been changed from $ 25;000 to $7,000. Mr. Killam suggested that the Board of Public ".orks would not oppose a small reduction in the estimate for storm water drainage and possibly the appropriation for the Park Department could be reduced. An exhaustive report on educational costs of the Town of Reading which had been prepared by Mr.. George Larrabee was dicus sed and the Clerk was in- structed to have a number of copies of this report prepared for distribution to the members of the Finance Committee at the next meeting. It was voted to meet. Sunday morning, January 31st at the High School Building to make a tour of inspection of the various School properties. It was also voted to omit the regular meeting February 2 .and meet Feb. 9th. Later at the suggestion of the Chairman the date was changed to Feb. 4. Members present: Ohm.
