Reading, Mass . , April 9, 19$1
The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
7:00 P.M.
Chairman Hopkins, Donahue, Calvin, Harrison, Walker, and
Superintendent Welch were present.
Records of previous meeting read and approved.
Considered applications for sewer extensions in relation to
1951 program.
Voted to perform jobs in order of receipt of applications
in so far as this is consistent with departmental efficiency.
Voted to establish Superintendent salary at the maximum
figure as voted at the Town Meeting which is $122.25 per week.
Received petition from several abuttors on Pearl Street
between Main Street and Franklin Street requesting that a storm
drain be installed in this section of Pearl Street.
Placed on file pending preparation of plan.
Received petition from several abuttors on Oak Street in
the vicinity of West Street requesting that a storm drain be
installed in Oak Street and that a ditch be dug in the rear of
their properties to drain their yards.
Placed on file pending investigation and preparation of
plan.
Voted to hold a hearing on a proposed drain easement off
Pearl Street between Nos. 225 and 229.
Voted to make repairs to garage roof at a cost of $140.00
with the work to be done by W. P. Gray of Stoneham.
Voted to sell old Sullivan Compressor at Mill Street P. S.
to Ralph Hall Co. for the sum of $300.00.

Voted to ask invitation bids for the sale of two horizontal
boilers at Mill Street P. S. Invitations to be sent to all companies '
that bid on junk sale.

and placed on file:

Following Granite Curbing Applications received, approved,
and placed on file:

Voted permission to the League of Women Voters to hold a
plant sale on Reading Common on Saturday, May 26, 1951.
Conferred with certain department employees relative to ,
promotions to newly created jobs and salaries for existing jobs.
Voted to lay on table appointments to the following classifica-
tions -- "Asst. Supt." - "Junior Office Engr." and "Asst. Pump. Sta.
Engr."
Voted to hold five consecutive meetings of Board on the next
five consecutive Monday Evenings , April 16, 1951 to May 14, 1951
inclusive, all meetings to start at 9:00 P .M. -
Voted to install two new lights (one in each office) for the
sum of $119.00. Work to be done by Harry Camp.
Received letter from Mr. Theodore Johnson, 246 Woburn Street
requesting an abatement on his January, 1951, water bill. -
Voted to abate the sum of $26.00. ,
Received letter from Mr. Frank Zeo, 9 Orchard Park Drive,
requesting speedy action on the proposed sewer extension in Summer
Avenue and Orchard Park Drive. Letter was accompanied by a copy of

a letter he had written to Dr. Charles Baisley as Chairman of the
Board of Health.
Both letters placed on file pending the preparation of a
plan and the holding of a hearing relative to the proposed sewer
extension.
Received letter from Albert Woodward, 289 West Street,
requesting that he be given permission to connect a collecting
drain from his cellar to the public storm drain in West Street.
Permission granted subject to the provision that a clean
out manhole be placed in the line near the cellar wall.
Board adjourned at 10:30 P.M.
