HomeMy WebLinkAbout1951-02-27 Board of Public Works Minutes 105 Reading, Mass. , February 27, 1951 ' The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P.M. Chairman Calvin, Messrs. Donahue, Harrison, Walker, and Superintendent Welch were present. Records of previous five meetings read and approved. Received bids at 7:30 P.M. for the sale of junk at the Mill Street Pumping Station. Following is a list of bidders: Max G. Horovitz Co. Stoneham $2,670.00 Savransky Bros . Co. Somerville $2,100.00 Hooley & Merchant Chelsea $1,826.26 S. Kasper & Sons Wakefield $11475.00 Medwid Welding Service Boston $1,262.00 John Zanni Reading $1,250.00 Voted to accept the bid of Max Horovitz Co. , of Stoneham and to sell them the junk. Received letter from Superintendent relative to maximum salary for Superintendent as established by Personnel Board. Voted to write Personnel Board asking them to reconsider their action. Voted that if Personnel Board refuses to reconsider their action, the Board will introduce an amending motion on Article 17 at the March Town Meeting. Received letter from Carl Cooper, 167 Summer Avenue, thank- ing Board for abatement on water bill and for the installation of new water meter. Following Granolithic Sidewalk applications received, approved, and placed on file: Frederick Stewart 62 Locust Street/ Received letter from Ella Paton requesting permission for 106 the Wakefield Christian Youth Council to hold a sunrise service on Bear Hill on Easter Sunday, March 25, 1951. Voted to issue permit. Hearing at 8:00 P.M. on, the proposed acceptance as a public way of a portion of Bradford Road from Sta. 0 + 00 to sta. 3 + 28.96. Following persons present: James Allen In favor Mary Allen In favor John Ventura In favor Voted to recommend to the Town the acceptance as a public way of the above described section of Bradford Road. Signed report to Town Meeting relative to the above described acceptance, a copy of which is attached hereto and herewith becomes a part of these records. All the persons attending the hearing on Bradford Road signed a release from damages in favor of the Town. Signed report to Town Meeting relative to the acceptance as a public way of a portion of Shipkin Avenue from Sta. 0 } 00 to Ste. 6 + 00 a copy of which is attached hereto and herewith becomes a part of these records. Hearing at 8:30 P.M. on the proposed rounding of the westerly corner of Brook Street and Summer Avenue. Following persons present: Mr. Justin McCarthy In favor Mrs. Justin McCarthy In favor Voted to recommend to the Town the rounding of this corner. Signed Plan showing proposed new corner radius. Signed report to Town Meeting relative to the above described , corner rounding, a copy of which is attached hereto and herewith becomes a part of these records. 107 Mr. & Mrs . Town of Reading REPORT OF THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS ON THE RELOCATION OR ALTERATION OF THE NORTH-WESTERLY INTERSECTION OF SUMMER AVENUE AND BROOK STREET - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Board of Public Works of the Town of Reading, having determined and adjudged that common convenience and necessity require that the public highways be laid out, relocated or altered as and in the location hereinafter described, having complied with all require- ments of law relating to notice to owners of land thereof, and of a hearing thereon,- and having met at the time and place appointed for such hearing, and then and there heard all persons present who desired to be heard have laid out, relocated or altered as public highways for the use of the Town, the North-West corner of Summer Avenue and Brook Street. The boundaries and measurements of said public highways as so laid out, relocated or altered are as follows: Beginning at a point on said Northerly side line of Summer Avenue, said point being S. 58 - 27' - 00" E. , a distance of 433.16 feet measured along said Northerly side line of Summer Avenue from a County Stone Bound; Thence by a curved line running in an Easterly and North-Easterly direction, having a radius of 30.00 feet, and through lands of said Justin J. McCarthy and Mary A. McCarthy, a length of 45.00 feet to a point on the said Westerly side line of Brook Street; Thence turning and running S. 350 - 36' - 00" W. , along said Westerly side line of Brook Street, a distance of 27.95 feet to a Stone Bound set at the point of inter- section of said Westerly side line of Brook Street with said Northerly side line of Summer Avenue; Thence turning and running N. 580 - 27' - 00" W. , along said Northerly side line of Summer Avenue, a dis- tance of 27.95 feet to the point of beginning. -2- The area of the easement herein granted is estimated to contain 163. 5 square feet of land, more or less . The above described lines being more fully shown as a Plan entitled "Relocation of the North Westerly Corner of Brook Street and Summer Avenue, Reading, Mass." dated January, 1951, Board of Public Works, Philip Welch, Superintendent, said Plan being a part of this description. We determine that no damages will be sustained by any person or persons in their property by reason of the taking to be made for this improvement. No betterments are to be assessed for this improvement. Town of Reading REPORT OF THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS ON THE LAYING OUT OF A PORTION OF BRADFORD ROAD - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Board of Public .Works of the Town of Reading having de- termined and adjudged that common convenience and necessity require the laying out of a Town Way under the provisions of law authorizing the assessment of betterments , substantially in the location hereinafter described, having complied with all requirements of law relating to no- tice to the, owners of land thereof and of a hearing thereon, and having met at the time and place appointed for such hearing and then and there heard all persons present who desired to be heard, have laid out as a Town Way for the use of the Town running South-westerly from the existing town way known as Lowell Street to a dead end, substantially as and in the location of a portion of the private way known as Bradford Road, the boundaries and measurements of said way as so laid out as follows: 1 Beginning at a point on the Ii{ South-westerly side-line of said Lowell Street , said point being N. 490-111-00" W. a distance of 195. 74 feet measured along said South-westerly side line of Lowell Street from a Stone Bound set at the P. C. of a curve at Fielding Road; Thence by a curved line running in a Westerly and South-westerly direction having a radius of 20.0 feet by lands of John J. Ventura, a length of 39.34 feet to a point of tangent; Thence S. 190-061-30"W. , still by lands of said John J. Ventura, and by lands of James L. Allen and Mary A. Way or the Inhabitants of the Town of Reading, a distance of 271.86 feet to a point of curve; Thence by a curved line to the Left , having a radius of 40.0 feet , still by said lands now or formerly Of Fannie D. Way or Inhabitants of the Town of Reading, a length of 46.98 feet to a point on said South-Westerly side line of Lowell Street ; Thence S. 490-111-00" E. , along said South-Westerly side line of Lowell Street , a distance of lno.03 feet to the point of beginning. The above described lines being more fully shown on a Plan entitled "Bradford Road, Reading, Mass." dated Febnuary ,19511 Board of Public works , Philip Welch, Superintendent , said Plan being a part of this description. We determine that no damages will be sustained by any person or persons in their property by reason of the taking to be made for this improvement. All acts in connection with said laying out are done under the provition of law authorizing the assessment of better- ments , and betterments are to be easessed therefor. This laying out so made by us we hereby report to the Town for acceptance and recommend that said way shall thereafter be known as a public town way and named Bradford Road, and that the sum i of Two Thousand (gy^,000.00) Dollars be raised and appropriated f or said laying out and for the construction of said. way.
