HomeMy WebLinkAbout1951-02-12 Board of Public Works Minutes 99 Reading, Mass. , February 12, 1951 The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P.M. Chairman Calvin, Messrs. Donahue, Harrison and Superintendent Welch were present. Received letter from Selectmen accompanied by a petition from 41 citizens representing 76 children living on or in the vicinity of Lowell Street northwesterly of Grove Street requesting that a retain- ing wall and sidewalk be built on the northeasterly side of Grove St. abutting properties numbered 321 to 361 inclusive. Voted to prepare estimate and submit budget item to Finance Committee. Received letter from Personnel Board relative to proposed new classifications and containing an approved list of departmental salaries for 1951 for all employees. Mr. Carl Amon of Bond Street conferred with Board requesting that additional lights be installed at Birch Meadow Playground for use during summer months for soft ball games. Voted to prepare a budget item and submit it to Finance Committee. Considered letter from Ralph Hall Co. and Fairbanks Morse Co. relative to cost of installing diesel generators at Mill Street Pumping Station for the purpose of hating emergency auxiliary power. Discussed various possibilities for auxiliary power at length. Received letter from Boy Scouts thanking Board for use of Common on February 10, 1951. Received letter from Selectmen stating that they would give consideration to the recuest of this Board that a section of Room 19 be partitioned off for the use of this Board. 100 Received letter from Cecil Latham, 354 Lowell Street request- ing an abatement of the street betterment assessment placed against the property in 1949. Voted to deny the request. Voted not to abate any amount on the following water bills: Dr. Harold Boyle -- 207 Woburn St. - Jan. 1951 Bill Mr. Cecil Latham -- 354 Lowell St. - Jan. 1951 Bill Signed three copies of contract with Pittsburgh Des Moines Co. for the construction of one 750,000 gallon elevated water storage tank.
