HomeMy WebLinkAbout1950-11-27 Board of Public Works Minutes 79 Reading, Mass. , November 27, 1950 The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P.M. Chairman Calvin, Messrs. Donahue, Harrison, Hopkins, Walker and Superintendent Welch were present. Records of previous meeting read and approved. Signed plan showing location of proposed Gas Main Extension in Spring Street. Superintendent reported that he contacted two companies for prices on the sale of junk at the Mill Street Pumping Station. Received letter from Gerry & Northrup Co. of Boston quoting price of $5,330.00 for repairs to engineer's house at Mill Street. Price does not include any allowance for heating changes. ' No action taken. Superintendent reported that Town Counsel states this Board does not have the authority to rent the engineer's house at Mill St. but that the Selectmen do have such authority. Received plan and explanatory letter fro* Boston Stove Foundry. Plan and letter explain in detail the culvert and building they propose constructing. Details include bearing loads , column loads, floor loads, methods and type of reinforcing, size of members, slabs , walls, footings, etc. Voted to approve issuance of permit to Boston Stove Foundry, 155 John St. , Reading, allowing them to extend the culvert under John St. across their property to the easterly side line of the Town Sewer Easement. Received letter from Mr. Wm. Knight, 470 Main St. , Reading, a temporary employee of this Department, requesting permission to to rent the engineer' s house on Mill Street. 80 Taken under advisement. Signed petition directed to the Metropolitan District Com- mission renuesting that the Town of Reading be admitted to the Metropolitan Water District. Voted the following pole locations : Pole No. 64 - abandoned �A Considered and discussed various possible fees for the exten- sion of water mains. Considered 1950 report to Capital Budgeting Committee. Voted to approve report and file same with Committee. Considered part of 1951 Budget. Following Items approved: Office Acct.-Sidewalk Acct.-Engineering Division-Maint. Storm Drains,-Chap, 90 Const.- Chap. 90 Maint.-Snow, & Ice Acct.-Pensions-House Connection Acct.-Park Dept. ' Following Item amended: Dump Acct. Following Item added: Resurface Haven St. from Sanborn St. to Gould St. Voted to hold next meeting of Board on Monday, December 11, 1950. Short resume' of Meeting with School Committee on Sunday, November 26, 1950 at the proposed site of the new high school is incorporated herewith: The Board met with the School Committee on Sunday, November 26, 1950, at 11:00 A.M. at the proposed Birch Meadow site of the proposed new high school. The School Committee explained to this , Board the tentative plans and their thoughts relative to possible access roads. Both Boards then journeyed to the School Committee Office where the tentative plans were studied. - / 81 The School Committee agreed to furnish copies of the tents- , tive plans to the Board of Public Works and also a verbal descrip- tion of where they would prefer the access roads, sewer extension, water mains , etc. , after which this Board will prepare necessary estimates.
