Reading, Mass. , November 20, 1950
' The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
7:30 P.M.
Chairman Calvin, Messrs. Donahue, Harrison Hopkins, Walker
and Superintendent Welch were present.
Records of previous meeting read and approved as amended.
Bids for new twenty-four inch gravel packed well and appur-
tenances and for two and one-half inch test wells received and
opened at 7:30 P.M.
Following is a list of bidders:
D. L. Mahar. Co-. , Cambridge, Mass .
Fort -inch test wells left in ground - $3.90 per lin. ft.
For 2 -inch test wells removed - $3.40 per lin. ft.
For 24-inch gravel packed well - $120.00 per lin, ft.
Voted to reject bids and to readvertise for new bids in the
Boston Herald and the Boston Glove.
Voted to permit High School Athletic Association to move
bleachers to Stoneham High Field and return them to Reading provid-
ing they accept all responsibility and bear all expense.
Received petition from several abuttors on Meadow Brook
Lane reouesting that this street be accepted as a public way.
Voted to place petition on file and to process request in
due course.
Received letter from R. K. Mansfield of Natick, owner of
land abutting Main Street near Franklin Street offering the use
of this land for the disposal of solid fill.
Voted to inform Mr. Mansfield that this Department has
plenty of available Town owned land for the disposal of solid fill.
Voted to approve 3-day vacation (November 24 to November
28, 1950) for Superintendent.

Received petition from several abuttors on Orchard Park Drive .
requesting that this strut be accepted as a public way.
Voted to place this request on file and to process it in due
course.
Mr. Harold Hardy conferred with Board relative to purchasing
the contents of the Mill Street Pumping Station for junk purposes.
Taken under advisement.
Hearing at 8:00 P .M. on proposed sewer extension in Middlesex
Avenue from Grand Street to near High Street.
Following persons present:

.Voted to extend sewer as above described.
Hearing at 8:30 P.M. on proposed change of grade in Orchard
Park Drive (Refer to Plan A-5-82) . Proposed new _grade shown in ,
green ink.

Ruth Shepardson - 3 Orchard Park Drive - In favor
D. B. Shepardson- Orchard Park Drive - In favor

All persons present signed a Release from Damages in favor
of the Town.
Voted to approve the proposed new grade as shown in green
ink on Plan A-5-82.
Received notice from Selectmen relative to filing 1951
Budgets. ,
Considered request of Mr. D. B. Shepardson of 3 Orchard -
Park Drive that he be allowed to construct a catch basin and drain
in his yard and connect same to the public storm drain in Summer Ave.

Voted not to approve request unless it is proven that he
' cannot drain his yard with surface drainage.
Received notice from Selectmen relative to filing 1951
Town Reports.
Conferred with the following members of the School Committee:
Mr. Glover, Mr. Turner, Mr. Morton, Mr. Griffin, Mr. Crosby,
and Mr. Lord.
Discussed the problem of various kinds of utilities for the
proposed new High School which will be built southwesterly of Birch
Meadow Playground. The discussion covered the problem of sewer
mains, water mains and access streets .
The School Committee reouested cost estimates for these
facilities.
' The Board agreed to prepare the estimates providing that the
School Committee will furnish a plan showing the approximate school
location and a statement of what they would like for access roads
and further providing that the Board of Public Works can obtain
funds for the preparation of basic plans .
Voted to hold next meeting on November 27, 1950.
Received letter and Plan from the Boston Stove Foundry
showing a proposed new building to be constructed over the existing
drainage ditch. The proposal includes extending the culvert under
John Street to the westerly limit of the proposed new building.
They request permission from the Board to build this culvert.
Voted to withhold approval pending receipt of more detailed
' plan of the proposed culvert which will show proposed design in
detail.
Considered 1950 Report to Capital Budgeting Expenditures
Committee.

Taken under advisement and Superintendent instructed to pre-
pare one copy for each Board Member. -
Signed Plan showing change in grade of Orchard Park Drive.

Signed Order for Curbing Assessments covering work done in 1950.
Signed Order for Sidewalk Assessments covering work done in 1950.
Board adjourned at 11:00 P.M.
