Reading, Mass . , June 26, 1950
prThe regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
7:30 P.M.
Chairman Calvin, Messrs. Donahue, Hopkins, Walker and Super-
intendent Welch were present.
Records of previous meeting read and approved.
Received bids at 7:30 P.M. for one gravel packed well to be
driven in Hundred Acre Meadow.
Following bids received:
D.L. Maher Co. , Cambridge, Mass . ,-$120.00 per lin. ft.
Voted to award contract to the D. L. Maher Co. at the bid
price of $120.00 per linear foot.
Signed four copies of contract. Mr. Maher signed four
copies of contract. Mr. Maher agreed to 'start work immediately.
Bids received at 8:00 P.M. for one five-ton truck.

Voted to purchase a Model RA1502 Sterling Truck at the net
bid price of $6,744.94.
Held informal hearing at 8:30 P.M. bn possibility of
accepting Shipkin Avenue as a public way.

Rough estimates of the cost of construction were furnished
to abuttors and an extended discussion took place without any deci-
sions being reached.
Voted to lay matter on table.
Following Granolithic Sidewalk application received, approved
and placed on file:

Received copy of decision of Appeal Board on request of
Dominic Zanni to remove gravel from pit abutting roadway to Reading
Rifle & Revolver Club. Decision stipulates that Public Works Dept.
shall establish a grade below whicb gravel shall not be removed.
Voted to authorize Superintendent to establish the above
described grade and to issue a certificate prescribing grade.
Voted to petition the Selectmen to hold a Special Town Meeting
as early as possible in the month of September. 1950.
Received letter from John H. Dobbins, 67 Washington Street
requesting that a barrier be erected between his property and the
Washington St. Park to prevent baseballs being hit onto his property.
Voted to investigate possibility of erecting barrier at this
and other locations of a similar nature and to prepare an estimate
of the cost.
Received letter from State Department of Public Health stating
that they have tested six samples of water taken from various loca-
tions in the Town and that the water of all samples was free from
bacteria characteristic of pollution and that the water was safe
to use for drinking purposes.

Voted to publish the letter in the next issue of the Reading
1 Chronicle .
Voted to hold next meeting of Board on July 10, 1950, in the
form of a dinner meeting if suitable arrangements can be made.
Board adjourned at 11:30 P.M.
